Volvo trucks that had bonnet

Let me tell you a little about Volvo Titans genesis and continued living.

During the 1940s, Volvo had a truck with the designation L 292 popularly known as “Long Nose” due to its long bonnet and it was the largest Volvo truck. It was the past long hauler. It had a 8.6 litres VDB engine and developed 130 Hp. It could come with a 4-speed unsynchronized gearbox or five-speed synchronized gearbox K1. The truck above is brand new and it is spring in the north of Sweden.

But then in 1951 became the archaic truck replaced by L 393 Titan which was a more modern truck appearance. It had inherited much from L 292. The truck developed 150 HK. Above a period-style Swedish long hauler with a BeGe 1350 cab. (BeGe stands for Bror Göthe Persson). The gearbox was a Spicer. The truck above is renovated restored by members of the Volvo veteran club.

Then in 1954 Volvo came out with Titan Turbo, the world’s first commercial turbocharged truck. The turbo gave 35 hp more and the truck came to deliver 185 hp. It was a major breakthrough and the beginning of Volvo’s long experience with turbocharged diesel engines. The engine increased by 25 kg. The engine was the 9.6 liter and it was an engine that was also used in the L495 Titan. The yellow Volvo iron mark indicates that it is a turbo.

The L 495 Titan who came in 1962 and had 230 hp. My father got this model in 1964 and I got to ride with him often. He had a 12 meters pup trailer hooked to the truck and he drove timber, wooden planks and wood chips. The total length was 24 meters. A heavy truck at the time, with much force.

A nice shot of a nice N88 from Denmark during a Swedish truck rally. Danes always put color on rallies with their colorful trucks.

Then came the project “System 8” the thoroughly new Titan named N/NB88 with the same look but with a new cab and with a TD100 engine that developed 260 HP. It was the last model with the typical look from in 1951. Titan was very popular and drew both flatbed trailers, lumber, wood chips, gravel, fuel and heavy goods.
The picture above shows a Swedish N88 with a 1-axle trailer + one two axle pup trailer. They are designed so that they have a flatbed and the fuel tanks so that the truck carrying cargo down and on the way home fuel. Maximum utilization in other words, and smart too. The model N88 was identical with F88 in terms of driveline. The container in front of the rear wheel is a sanding unit. The cab is a Floby, another nice truck cab that was a bit finer than BeGe.

Regards FH13

Is it an other Floby cab ?

The ultimate belly-tank! Turks would’ve loved those! Robert

Is that the Uttoxeter Punchards Dan,just off the A518,and is that the same truck now owned by Bruce Parker?

Doug ran from home at Netherland Green nr Birch cross ,his lads are at Bramshall ,and yes Bruce has it now .

I took these few pictures whilst on a trip in Mendoza / Argentina early February 2011. Back then she was a working lorry and I presume this is still the case today.

I hope you enjoy these pictures.
Cheers
David

In Argentina Volvo sold a lot of long nose trucks with sleeper-cab in the 60Th , Viking and Titan and later 485 and 495.
Some are still in use as this beautidul example of Davidoff ,but engines are mostly Mercedes now.
This one is to sell :

But in South America it’s in Peru that Volvo had its biggest share of market and the N88 is also very appreciated. This NB 88 6x4 is in daily use.

Nice pictures Michel!

Honestly I did not think of looking under the bonnet to check if the engine was original, never realised that they might place an MB engine in there once the Volvo block had run its life…

But I think I might return there one fine day and I would probably be able to find the same spot back so who knows

Super photos Michel. Those South American Volvos look really well-cared for, unlike some old vehicles from other parts of the World.

Yes. Now you mention it, the pic does have Morocco printed in the corner.
Maybe the old Volvos were just durable vehicles, which inspired a bit of extra care in their owners. Both of the previous examples are almost like new.

A Swiss one well preserved.
