Volvo i shift

Hello All,

I’ve not driven Volvo i shift before, and I’ve kind of ‘■■■■■■■■’ my way onto a new wagon - Now, on Monday morning, I don’t want to look the inexperienced artic driver that I actually am, so can anyone just please advise me of what I need to do to get this truck moving, and keeping it moving ?

Thanks in advance

Put the lever in A* and press the go pedal. Once you’ve nailed that part you can work out the other stuff at your leisure.

Thankyou.

*If you want to make it go backwards use the R position instead of the A.

and it won’t start unless it’s in the N position

So don’t forget to put it in ‘N’ before you switch it off, as if the air drops before you get it going again then you’ll have to make an uncomfortable phonecall requesting the services of a man with a compressor.

Don’t forget to release the hand brake. It goes much faster if you do!

The gearbox is the easy part… Just make sure you don’t drag the trailer over some poor unsuspecting cyclist on your nearside, when turning left at traffic lights. (Or if you do, make sure all three axles go over his/her head!)

Indeed, it’s cheaper to reverse over them and make sure the job is done properly if need be. A single compensation payment for loss of a family member is always going to be more cost effective than paying Johnny cyclist for the rest of his life because you broke his spine is several places.

If there’s an easier way to change gear in a motor than the i-shift then I’ve yet to see it. Just point and go! (There s/b 2 reverse gears btw (to be manually selected)).

Just to be absolutely crystal, for any cyclists who may come across this thread, the above (previous entries) are just truckers’ humour.

Don’t worry,no cyclists will see that and if do…well they shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

Aha! I see what you did there. Sadly I haven’t the wit for a riposte.

please leave the cyclists alone as they need all the help they can get  as for the i-drive,select A on retarder stalk and use P on gear and press right pedal and go

I found out a fascinating fact about iShift when I was reading the book…

You’ve probably noticed you can flick between N1 and N2 in neutral. Well N2 allows 30% more revs on each gear, yarr!

if the air drops over the weekend. don’t forget to push the broms brake button back in on the dash or it won’t move

oh, and the steering adjuster is a small pedal above the accelerator pedal… otherwise it might be an uncomfortable day…

Make sure you switch on the “hill hold” switch on the dash, this holds on the brakes on after you release the foorbrake and switch to the accelerator, stops it rolling backwards on hills and you don’t have to keep pulling the handbrake on.

I have heard of a few new Volvo drivers ringing transport managers at silly o clock telling them the brakes won’t release

Done that with a Volvo bus before and the stupid thing was I KNEW the existence of the Broms brake
Also had the Broms come on in a middle of a school car park with the engine running and had been for about an hour :unamused:

 I know that story

I’d forgotten all about the broms knob on the Volvos  , so I had to look it up and remind myself. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=76840&p=1022511

In my defence, I’ve driven almost everything but a Volvo since I passed my tests in one.

Check position of the adjustable automatic retarder, last time i drove one it was a switch on the right of the steering column, about half the size of a normal indicator type switch, can’t remember the switching sequence but someone here will know, last one i drove had 3 levels of effort.

You don’t really weant it on full auto ■■■■■■ if you are empty or lightly loaded till you suss out how the truck drives, its just about the best standard fit retarder out there and quite capable of locking the drive axle should the truck do a quick downshift just as you enter a slippery bend or junction, a bad thing.

Lucky you, possibly the easiest truck to drive thats ever been made, except for seeing round the wardrobe mirrors and surround fitted outside the driver’s window.
