Volvo FH EBS valve

Having to replace the EBS valve on our FH520. £700+ :open_mouth: to replace it, it defiently changed the braking system characteristics when it failed along with and ESP EBS waring on the dash.
I’ve been told its not that unusual, anybody had the same thing?

Got to tell the boss at one point, which I’m not looking forward to as he’s on an economy drive.

Is this the Exhaust Brake Valve that is located on block under turbo. Sourcing one at the moment. Was quoted a lot less than £700 to supply genuine part for FH460. Not sure if they are similar. Does this price include fitting. Spurious available but not recommended.

I presume this is the EBS modulator valve, from the price quoted, that is mounted on the rear of the chassis and supplies the brake chambers on the drive axle. We have had a couple of those go over the years, the driver normally defects the vehicle as a big red STOP comes up and BRAKE FAILURE is on the dash (assuming this is a V2 FH)
The braking characteristics will change as the vehicle goes into a “safety mode” whereas the truck will only use pneumatic effort only from the brake pedal to the actuators, rather than utilising an electronic signal from the brake pedal to the modulator valve, which then dishes out the air to the wheel in question. This can make driving a bit scary as you press the brake pedal and nothing happens for a split second, then the brakes work, but this is only the same system as an early FH with no EBS.
As you found out, the valve needs replacing. Volvo charge about £600 for the valve, but if you look carefully the original valve will probably be made by Knorr Bremse, a quick search on their website with the volvo part number gives you their aftermarket part number, a quick phone to a parts supplier and you should be able to get one for £350-400. They are very simple to fit.

What coiler says, someone like N.E.T.S. or Fleet Factors should be able to source the same valve direct from Knorr or Wabco. Had something similar on a Merc, corrosion had got to the back of the air suspension control valve causing loss of pressure. £1200 from Merc :open_mouth: , £345 from N.E.T.S. :sunglasses: and they had one on the shelf :grimacing:

Don’t think it’s coincidence a lot of these go same time of year they’re salting the roads.

If I remember correctly the EBS will need to be programmed once fitted as they are coded left/right.its well worth checking the loom to make sure it’s not a wiring fault.
If volvo fit it you two years volvo warranty with it in case of failure, any part over £500 I always get them to fit it.

Yep sounds about right except I didn’t get a Red stop warning just EBS failure and get brakes checked at next stop.

I really wish you’d posted earlier though, could have saved us some money.

We’ve noticed that Volvo quite often do these all in fitted deals with warranty for the same or not much more than they’ll sell you the part if there’s not a much cheaper generic or remanufactured part available even if you’ve got the facilties to do it yourself you might as let them get covered in grease and benefit from the warranty as well.

We have our maintenance done by an Interdependent commercial vehicle workshop, but they have the computer systems to find faults and have done this job before, so I hope it’s ok.
From past experience they are pretty good at looking at the obvious/cheapest solution first, we had a truck go in after the alternator light went on and batteries drained. They said it might be the alternator, when we dropped it off, but the first thing they did was clean up the connections and that sorted it.

Sorry, thought you’d already replaced it from your original post. it won’t need reprogramming so long as the power is off when you remove the plug from the old valve.
It’s worth remembering if the front modulators start leaking Volvo do a repair kit that changes the bottom of the valve only, much cheaper than a full valve.

i have changed the bottom half on the rear one as well, my fh is getting on a bit now as it’s a 52 reg v2 so the valves could well have changed on later models

I’ve done the rear modulator on my 03,04 and 05 and they are all slightly different, but none of them had a repair kit for the bottom end. Then again all the valves failed on the electronics side not the physical side so a repair kit wouldn’t have been much use.

i only changed mine due to an air leek, when i took the bottom off the bottom of the 2 plastic plungers had more or less cut through the flat o rings in the bottom of the casting
i remember being told the part was not available but after a few phone calls i located one at less than half price of a new valve!
i have never had electric trouble yet though, i dont use the truck much these days so have not fitted many parts of late the last would be brake chambers to the front axle and an top end set up and engine re map
