can any one tell me about volvo fh13 520 what thay are like on fuel and mechanicly thanks
I’ve been running one for three years now.
And to be fair it’s been a good truck, but mine came from a good home(ET Morris)
It had been driven by one steady driver from new.
I get low eights in winter and high eights in summertime.
I’m on ferry work, I find that if I knock the cruise control back a couple of clicks that makes a difference and I don’t see that it takes me any longer at the end of the day.
The truck pulls like a train, in fact not much passes my on the hills weight for weight.
The only real problem I’ve had is, two winters ago in the really cold spell the wiring went BUBAR.
That cost me two days off the road, and £1500.00 approx.
But from what I have been told, lots of trucks, not just Volvo had problems that winter.
Hope this helps.
Flysheet on here was running one, despite being a Volvo man he wasn’t best happy with the mpg compared with earlier Volvo’s he ran. He flogged it in the end and did a runner to North America, he’s on a Volvo again but with a ■■■■■■■ under the hood

He was on low loader work and that’s not normally the best in the world for fuel consumption, so poss’ not a good reference point.
Ross.
i brought flysheets truck for my mate who was a little short at the time (hes paid me now) its running to west wales at the moment from west london down empty back with 24 ton but a low load on a flat trailer hes getting 9 mpg and happy with that its on about 750000k now i think so not new and still good

That’s odd as flysheet was always moaning on here that it was terrible on fuel… Did he fix the problem or is it just that it is better suited to the work it is doing now?

Aye, I should perhaps have read that properly first but my point was more that he found it poor on fuel compared to previous Volvos he had owned that he used for the same work with the same trailer. Maybe he just wasn’t driving it right…
Paul
You can’t take any notice of flysheet on fuel consumption, he was moaning that his mountain bike was too juicy last week
As Ross said, he was on low loader work, heavy and with a big set of ramps acting as a parachute all the time. He did say it was worse than the 460 it replaced though, so that does tell you something

We have 2 FH’s on out race team one a 2007 FH 520 the other is a 2003 FH12 460.
They both pull the same trailers, either a box van or a car transporter, depending on who’s driving.
The 520 does seem to be about 9 to 9.5mpg and the 460 about 8mpg, although some of this could be the drivers.
We don’t pull a great deal of weight the pulling the transporter we’ll be running at 28-30t and with the box van 20-22t.
The last team I worked for we had a 2007 FH440 again we were running at 28-30t, but I could get 10mpg or even more on a really steady run across europe, although some of this might be because the speed limiter on that truck was set at 87kmh instead of 90 on the 520.
As for maintanence, although we’ve had the 520 for a year we don’t do many miles compared to a general haulage truck. We’ve had nothing other than normal items such as tyres and brakes.
