Hi all, in my eyes Rocky the F88/89 were the best Volvos ever built !! And when driving one you were King of the road!
Regards Jimski
I have to agree Jimski, I loved every second spent in the cab, During the day nothing could compare and inspire jealousy from others.

While we’re on early F10/12 triviadidn’t the first flat roofs also have aircon as standard?
And wash/wipe on the four round headlamps…I found this unbelievable as I climbed out of my Guy Big J4 AV505
I don’t think your alone their Riverstick where my dad worked some drivers had an F10 after a Mandator - What a step up that must have been Day cab, no radio, no power steering, crash box, blanket on engine cover, no frills basic cab to sleeper cab , aircon, power steering ,light clutch , luxury trim (to todays standards 30+ years on! ), 278bhp , radio ,saloon car quietness
Bewick:
From memory they were £20 K for the two because Volvo were involved directly via Taits but the next three were a lump more as by the last one came it was the same price as a new Sed/Atk 8LXB sleeper we got at the same time and again from memory, and due to inflation, these two tractors had got up £14K apiece! I also was buying Big J tractors at the time and they were coming in at circa £9500 each! Cheers Bewick
Could you imagine the conversation between the drivers when they heard some new motors were coming ,some F88`s,a Sed/Atki 8LXB and some Big Js,i wonder which one they would opt for given the choice
Just wondered what reg/year were the first 290’s out , i always thought it was N reg but there’s one on Bubbs thread here

not as glamorous I know but I recall my ol man getting a new bedford TK in 1960 which replaced an O type bedford petrol engine old machine now that was a step up I can tell you and as a kid I thought it was the nuts, fredm

Small hubs would mean a bit of grille swapping, apart from the hubs and the registration, an easy give away is the inspection flap that slanted out to meet the protuding grille of the 290 and a proper 290 had a tubular air stack
My Dad had a 290 on an N reg, JJO 615N, they had some M regs too and they were all 240s, they also had some P regs and they were the first with the brown trim, the N reg had the blue trim the same as the 240s

Thanks newmercman , like you- my old man had a new N reg 290 ( for Swifts northampton ) supplied by billows & i’m that sad i still recall the reg HVV 692N it still had the air wipers, a fibreglass hatcher? catwalk fueltank & a radiomobile radio & he stepped up from an M reg 86 after several mandators , heres a pic of it’s sister this went to Skegness depot
I think his was the last one to be signwritten as later vehicles had the new bird sticker on the doors

Hi jim1970,Great photo’s of Barbour’s F88’s, reminds me of the “Happy Hours” spent in Routiers with the likes of Jimmy Brown,Willie Munro,Sinclair,Ian Lennox,Harley,Cockney Roy,etc.etc. not forgetting the Southampton lads Barry,Dave,Mick and Kevin RIP.
Here’s a shot of me lifting a box off in Trieste Docks having delivered a large led screen to Udine stadium.and in the yard, also a TAE/Europa left ■■■■■■ with a Liverpool reg.no…
Regards
Richard
Hi MaggieD, i was just looking at excellent pics of your 88s on R & A, and it reminded me of a lad i used to work with who used to drive for them, and told me untold tales. Think he told me he had an 88 then a merc. His name’s Roy “winky” Toleman. He’s on for Widdowsons at the mo’.
