volvo f88

Whoa lads, you’ve gone off the subject again this is about F88s, If you wanna talk about F10s/12s, open a new thread.

Your right Mark I loved the F12s flat roofs I had some good service from my ones and even 8 years with same clutch in one of them.
Used to love that whistle when you changed up

No ones actually “gone off subject”, the F10/12 was a developement of the F88/89 so it sort of follows that the thread might develope in that direction:) Anyway, the F88 talk seems to have dried up for now:(

This one was still around the show circuit recently, not sure if it still is,or on the road

This is an April '76 shot of the first two F88’s we got from Taits the then Volvo dealers for our area, they offered me one hell of a cracking deal to get an F88 into our fleet,it was so good I said OK,deal, but I want two!!! There was a bit of coughing and spluttering but they let me have two at the same price £££££££.We eventually ran 6 F88’s,3 on the Bewick fleet and 3 on the K. Fell fleet, the last F88 joining the Fell fleet in Jan '77 where it replaced a 250 ■■■■■■■ engined Sed Atk which although only 18 months old I was glad to see the back of!! Cheers Bewick.
The only downside to the deal was they both came on Good-Year tyres and I didn’t have the heart to insist on Michelins after the excellent deal I’d got!!

290 F88’s were running for about 12 grand here in 1976…How much of a good deal were they at your end Bewick?

298_700211007.jpg 88 originally owned new by Albertis from Carlisle

From memory they were £20 K for the two because Volvo were involved directly via Taits but the next three were a lump more as by the last one came it was the same price as a new Sed/Atk 8LXB sleeper we got at the same time and again from memory, and due to inflation, these two tractors had got up £14K apiece! I also was buying Big J tractors at the time and they were coming in at circa £9500 each! Cheers Bewick

Yes their was a 240 because I owned a S reg one and 2 T reg 278’s

The first F10’s were 278bhp

There was definately a 240hp version available in the early F10, I owned a T reg one, very different to the 278 in that it had no ‘pre heater’ (on the inlet manifold) and it had a cold start on the pump which is totally the opposite to the 278 and the 240 DIDN’T smoke it’s conkers off in the morning!! :smiling_imp:

phantom:
they had some on hercocks with coach diffs they would cruise comfortably at 70 but dropped off terrible when they came to a hill.

This was my Xreg 1981 F12 330 which had the highest ratio diff option, they were spec’d by Kammac for light loads & HARD work, that’s 1,350rpm @ a little over 50mph!! very low reving for the day.

phantom:
The F12 had the 305 and a 335, I had a 305 on Kinches and in its day a very powerfull truck nothing would catch it, because of the disasterous 257 volvo quickley had a re vamp of the F10 / F12 because of the sudden lack of sales and came up with the 299 bhp F10 intercooler and the 385 intercooler F12

All the first Globetrotters had the Intercooler engine, the early ones were 355 & from 1982 385, the 385 also became available in the ‘flat top’ from 1982. (we’ve got an early 1983 flat top 6x2 ‘T ride’ version in our yard) :sunglasses:

Ross.

To stop the Volvo smoking there was an orange button that helped the engine warm up quicker, it looked like a diff lock switch with a safety catch but operated the exhaust butterfly

My F88 never did smoke that much not like some of them, but that was part of the presence of an F88, bit of a ■■■■ though when there was one at the front of the ferry and your at the back.

She’s been around some years now but I never tire of seeing this old girl!

Stiil working!
