volvo f88

3300John:
Hiya iv’e driven that Volvo its straight as a die…it needs the tank(stainless) chopping off(loads of dosh)scrap
then put a nice beaver tail flat putting on it. you’ve got a crew cab its ideal for a classic transporter.
there’s even a good size winch underneath to pull dead vehicles on with. that pump on the front needs the gas axe first.
the cab has no rot. i seem to remember the Volvo for sale at Malvern at a better price but had no takers.
John

Why not keep it as it is? There are loads of “standard” tractor units in preservation. If the fire-fighting gear still works (or can be made functional), it would make a good working fire appliance for a museum/collection of old vehicles. It would still be useable for shows/road runs etc. The crew cab would be ideal for entertaining lots of enthusiasts. Keep the history “as found”- that’s my preference.

Weren’t the F89’s all LHD?

It’s not been unknown for F88 owners to ‘badge engineer’ their trucks into 89’s!!

Ross.

there was an 89 many moons ago that had been converted, it was in one of the truck magazines, i am not sure but it could have been a tag axle as well, and if memory serves it was a brown colour with red stripes down the side of the cab, could this one be it? the stack is on the right side

MVA370R Also a RHD F89. Funstons had these new?

Still working away in the summer.

That’s an F88 290 grille & lower front pannel so probably an F88.

Ross.

I think you’ll find that both MVA369R and 370R are fitted with F12 engines to F89 spec, done by a chap near Bury St Edmunds…Pete ■■?
There was an article in Truck Magazine many years ago when they painted were Orange and Brown

thats the one i was thinking of top pic!

I knew Pete (can’t remember his last name) and his F88/89 was a really nice job. He also removed the passenger seat and put a cooker in the passenger side with a fold down table that he used to sit on the bunk to use.

mrken:

T.B.H Ross just checked both my ones had round sidelights

This one is an F89 reg number OKD 867S very similar reg to the one in your pic , could it have been the same firm ?

i think ive asked before but no one seemed to know …

It’s been bugging me for a while now & it’s finally come to me, that 240 F88 colour scheme is very similar to a Liverpool firm from the 80’s & 90’s and they ran an F89. They were called Camel Transport, I understand that they had done some international work but by the time I’d come across them they were only doing Irish & UK work.

Anyone remember Camel Transport from Liverpool??

Ross.

i remember going looking at the F89 with my stepdad and the bloke who bought it when i was about 18 yrs old , it was being stored in a large building by a volvo main dealer in manchester . i’ve tried to remember the colour of it then but for the life of me i can’t .

we’d actually gone to view an F10/12 rather than the F89 but he opted to buy this instead due to it having an engine rebuild . when the deal was done it was taken to volvo for some additions before delivery but i buggerd if i can remember the colour .

i’d love to know some history as it was my first drive after i passed my test .

THAT ,motor is scarry ,its got an s reg a 240 grill and cab ie vents ect ,but a 290 fuel tank eh

Its not scary I guess its a late import probabaly from france or belgium

Yes,all F89s imported into the UK were LHD,but, as pointed out by zb Anorack and Saviem on P9 of this thread, they were produced as a RHD for the Australian market.Saviem quite rightly asked the question ‘if they can be made RHD for the Aussies’ then Volvo were lying to UK market when they said all F89s were LHD.The question now is “WHY” did they do that?Answers on a post card please to Saviem c/o “Bollinger” (chilled—not cooled)

But wasn’t the RHD F89 called the G89 ? or have i missed something ?

if it was then they looked completely different , having the front axle mounted further forward in order to fit the bigger engine .

i do seem to remember that a regular F89 was converted to RHD but i cant remember where i read it .

I think you’re right Bowser, someone did convert a F89 to RHD,I can’t remember who did it,but no doubt some knowledgeable poster out there will have the info.

If you put RHD F89 into Google, there are photos of MVA370R in two different liveries, claiming it to be an 89.
BUT,it has the thick grille and a slanted inspection panel

As Bigr250 pointed out it’s a F88 290 trying to masquerade as a F89
