volvo f88

geoffthecrowtaylor:
Thats wrong Tony all the Volvos had Bosch pumps Simms pumps were on Rolls Royce etc the only different pumps fitted were Sigma on Italian F89s to give them more BHP.Crow.

Just goes to show Geoff, getting older sometimes dims the brain cells. You’re quite right of course.

T.B.H Ross just checked both my ones had round sidelights

An S plate with the narrow grille. Maybe I was just imagining that story about the wide grille going on the last of the 240s (230s, 260s, 270s… :stuck_out_tongue: ). There is still this, though:

I see that F88 Reg OKD 853S is a left hand drive,is it possible that it’s an earlier year and been imported and then re-registered.

Both my small grills were lhd but both were brown trim cabs but pulled like trains I had a irish reg F89 that was blue trim cab but that was a 1973, I wonder if they were 260s then .

My life was so simple years ago.Small chrome grille =240. Big plastic grille with a mushroom stack=290.LHD with a flat stack on passenger side,F89 =330.Then I stumbled across this thread :frowning: :frowning: .Slowly going through it all,and very interesting it all is.I agree that differences are more than likely explained by the re reg.LHD F88 imports and/or the last of the breed being parts bin specials.Good stuff.

Nice looking truck but I’d bet my bottom dollar that it was imported 2nd hand & recieved the ‘Sreg’ as the date first reg’d in the UK as I set out earlier & I’m certain that the latest reg the 240 (narrow) grill was used was 1994 ‘Mreg’. In fact, I nearly bought a LHD 1974 F88 240 from the auction when Checkley Commercials had their closing down auction & that was an ‘Rreg’ with narrow grille & round sidelights and that would’ve been about 1980.

Evening all, yes the last narrow grill 240s were 74, M, reg. Last one I sold to Roy Jones, (ADAM JONES), Blackheath , was an 8speed 240, before I went to the land of Le Frog.

Never heard of the F89 grill being put on he last 240s, my pal Rob Owens, who was at Harshornes long after me, says never ever!!

Ross, if you went to David Unwins Auction, you were a brave man!! The age , and reg of any vehicle on sale would have been questionable, (to say the least)!!!

Tony, I must be getting senile, they were all on Bosch!! But on the Italian “job”, everything went like hell, up mountains, and down!! Somewhere I have an Itie spec sheet for an F89, I`m sure it says 350hp. I will try and find it.

mrken, who in their right mind would want to paint an F88, in the same colours as the old Sunbeam Trollybuses of Wolverhampton Corporation Transport, whose motto, “out of darkness cometh light”, could never have been more apposite!!! Hey I love that picture of your TK, a really nice motor!!

Well, I shall away to my, (chilled, Tony), Bollinger, and try to remember what I have forgotten about Volvos!!! Cheerio for now.

I dont remember any late 88’s fitted originally with the ‘square’ sidelights , arent these normally retrofitted ? -& as i re call only fitted to the later F86 . It’s just something i’ve noticed on alot of restored ones , presumeably easier to obtain than the round type

Narrow grill 240 16spd blue trim 1975 N reg

Same moter recabbed about 1984 tin worm & pictured here some 20yr on still shunting local & ready for another cab by the looks of it

Collinson bought it second hand about 18mths old & i drove it till 1981

Gunnerheskey they did bring two engines out for the F12 one was about 304 bhp as a mate of mine had one on Demulders at Doncaster he was an owner driver and he had run a 240 88 before. I am not sure what the bigger engine was but 350 seems to ring a bell.
cheers Johnnie

Hi all you F88/89 lovers on EBay right now is this fire tender low miles it’s in the uk anyone handy with a cutting torch and good at welding could make a lovely truck out of this ! And it’s only just under 13k what would some one pay for a Volvo F88 low miles as clean as this old tender !!
If only I had some where to do it … And the time !!!

Regards Jimski

thats been on EBAY for the last 500 years , shame really but not many people want firengines …

Maybe not but it would make a nice tractor unit 6x2 with a bit of graft ! And worth a few bob when it’s finished !!

Looks too nice to chop.

Hallo boys, i see here a lot of disagreement about horsepower of Volvo’s 88/89 series and that is normal in those days, now we have ISO HP so everywehre all is the same. But after my experience of years and lots of brochures it should be this.

first model was still 4951 tiptop named not sure as it was sold in the UK.In belgium it was 240hp DIN other books and brochures give 230 up and that was a Swedish norm but which?
The 88 had as follow 240 SMMT nett, 250 SMMT brut, 260 DIN, 270SAE.
240 GB
250 sweden
260 B, FR, NL, D. and so on
270 F, B, NL. to show in some brochures it was nearer the 275HP DIN scania’s (in Sweden called the 260 HP)

The 89 was everywhere 330 called brochures shows sometimes (330HP SMMT/DIN/SAE.) but the Italian had a different pump adjustment
for the 350HP they needed overthere to fulfil the italian law.Because of the 44ton weight limit which was true 352HP for 44 tons.

Nearly only Scania could fulfil it because the switch from the 140 350HP DIN to the 141 with 375 DIN some time before, all other had to improvise. But Berliet also had the 352/356HP too.

regards, Eric

Hiya iv’e driven that Volvo its straight as a die…it needs the tank(stainless) chopping off(loads of dosh)scrap
then put a nice beaver tail flat putting on it. you’ve got a crew cab its ideal for a classic transporter.
there’s even a good size winch underneath to pull dead vehicles on with. that pump on the front needs the gas axe first.
the cab has no rot. i seem to remember the Volvo for sale at Malvern at a better price but had no takers.
John

Weren’t the F89’s all LHD?

fryske:

It’s not been unknown for F88 owners to ‘badge engineer’ their trucks into 89’s!!
