Having driven mainly Volvo FH and Daf XF over the past ten years, mainly tramping France and Spain, I suppose I should consider myself lucky not to have had any kind of break in or robbery from the cab. So far…
While the Daf is apparently notoriously easy to ‘key’ the lock I’m told that the Volvo is virtually impossible to get into.
I had one attempt made on the Daf but I had the rivet pin through the button trick on so they didnt get in, but I know a few drivers who have been robbed in Dafs and Scanias and Ivecos either whilst asleep or away from the cab, by scroats forcing the doorlocks but know of no-one who has had the same done on a Volvo.
So is it true, are Volvo cab door locks so much better? and if so why don’t other manufactuers follow suit?
If unsure of the area I always used to put a strap though the handles so never used to think about it. I know one or two of our drivers had problems at night and we had vovlvos there.
It took less than 15 minutes to clean the cab of 2005 FH12 in La Jonquera. I was on the holiday, my father was driving it, just took a quick visit to the supermarket on his way home, that was enough.
on a side note, anyone ever got locked out of 1.
i pulled out of a tight farm with a slider trailer on, in the closed position. stopped in the 1st layby, (narrow) to stretch it back out, peeing down with rain, but just jumped out, (without coat) to set the buttons on the trailer, as i shut the door i heard a click
the bloody door locked itself
i’d luckily left the window a jar, spent the next 10 mins getting ■■■■ wet through, whilst findind the right kind of stick, then balancing on the wheel, whilst hanging on the mirror arm with 1 hand, whilst trying to pop the door handle back through open window with said stick!!!
lesson learned.
ShropsBri:
What’s the rivit pin through the button trick,if you would be so kind Kells?
If it’s not your truck then you might want to ask permission of the gaffer first.
Push the door lock button down to the ‘lock’ position then drill a 3mm hole through the button and internal door skin. Obtain two 2.5mm standard rivets and at night when you lock the doors stick the rivets in the holes, this stops the buttons popping up and the door unlocking if someone tries to key the locks.
Obviously it has little effect in preventing them smashing the window with a brick.
