Vodafone mobile broadband

I hope someone will be able to tell me if they are satisfied with their Vodafone modem. A friend of mine, who is not computer literate, has recently bought a new Toshiba all singing and dancing laptop :grimacing: . He came round tonight to ask me to set up the vodafone mobile broadband modem for which he has just signed up on an 18 month contract at £15 a month for 3Gb per month. After a hiccup in getting it to work (after a phone call to vodafone to check whether the sim card had been activated, they said it had, but mysteriously about 2 mins after we came off the phone to them it suddenly burst into life!) I was disappointed in the time it takes to refresh pages etc.( it is slower than my old dial-up pre- broadband connection used to be) When it comes to watching video such as the youtube clips on Bully’s Bar, then forget it! It keeps stopping and buffering the video every 2 seconds, making it un-watchable. Ok, It’s not my problem, and he is going back to the vodafone shop tomorrow to see what they say, but I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience of these modems and if they are satisfied with them. I have read all the threads I could find on the subject and I could only see one person mentioning vodaphone (Traz). Any views would be appreciated.

my daughter has one, was watching her use it a couple of days ago (in a 2g area in Devon) and it seemed quite fast ( I couldn’t get my 3 one to work there any faster than 5 kbps!!!)

when you’re in a 3g or High speed area they’re good - even works when moving - a friend of hers was using it while my daughter was driving last week :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

also works in europe - but costs extra

I’d recommend her vodafone one rather than my 3 one !

Thanks for replying here Denis. He has been into the shop and changed it for another one. he is coming round here this afternoon to let me check it out. After he had gone the other night I thought about his problem and remembered that he has Norton on his machine, so perhaps that is slowing things down, I know it did on my son’s laptop and he got rid of it and installed AVG and has had no problems since and it now flies along.

my daughter has norton 360 , doesn’t cause her any problems !

Throw any type of norton in the bin and get avast on it , its free and not as ram /cpu intensive as norton and i bet it will run faster as well.

Gave up on symantec products years ago and never looked back since tbh

In the old pre-Windows days of DOS then programs such as Norton Utilities were very good, although I preferred X-Tree Gold myself. Since the advent of GUI driven operating systems Norton seemed to take over. HOWEVER, in recent years they seem to have lost the plot somewhat and other less resource hungry programs seem to have got them licked. Everyone seems to have their favourites. I was amazed today when talking to a colleague in the canteen, who had just bought a laptop from Curry’s who asked about having AVG instead of Norton and they said they had never heard of it! This takes the ignorance of the usual shop assistants in these places to new limits. :unamused:

currently in warwick services and getting 7.2mbs! pretty fast!!!
Get yourself a dongle!

Currently at reading east getting 3g, it is again quoting me 7.2mbs but i think it only say’s that when you’re within a 3g connection area, probably means upto 7.2 but still loading lightning fast

Sywell Airport 2G 150kbs :frowning: but is out in the sticks a bit, glad i got reception

I just recentlybought a lap top so thought i would go for mobile broadband and i chose Vodafone. At my home its connected at 7.2 mbps but not everywhere as some places aint got the high speed connection.

As for Norton 360 i never was a fan of Norton but my new home PC has it and its the best anti virus i had so far beats AVG as used tio have that before.

I was north of leicester on the A46 the other day and that was the only time i was dissapointed with the reception, basically so slow that it really wasn’t worth bothering with :frowning:

Been using this for a month now, and it’s pretty ■■■■ good, can get a decent reception almost anywhere, if your thinking about this then i would buy it.

Usage, been surfing and visiting forums etc couple of hrs a day, downloaded a few short and small videos about the Hatton fight 5 minutes each, have used about 750mb (i’m on a 3 gig plan)!!! so will definately download some stuff from iplayer etc, a 60 minute programme on iplayer is about 600mb’s.

Rain can knock down the reception from decent 2g to crap in rural areas, so havn’t had much of that thankfully. anywhere where there’s population and development expect 3g connection, and for someone that only had dial-up before even 2mbs is blidingly fast.

dont use your Vodafone 3G Card in your laptop abroad £4.00 to £6.00 per gigabit download cost, very expensive
