The ESTA is only issued to citizens of countries that are eligible for an I-94 visa waiver, so yes you can cross on an ESTA.
No, if you are a US citizen all you need is your passport, if you are a British citizen you need your passport and green card, if you are just a British visitor you need your passport with the required visa waiver which should show as an attachment when the border officers scan it.

It has never cost me a cent to enter Canada but it on many occasions it has cost me $10.75 to re-enter, this has now gone up to $11.75.
Thanks so much guys. I just spoke with another European trucker and told me we don’t need anything as long as we have the ESTA

I have found out that the charge seems to be up to the officer in the booth, I got to know one of them due to spending a month of constant trips and then one day he just said “Ok, Pat, no charge today” also the first time I crossed back from New Brunswick the guy just let me through and said he couldn’t be bothered with it.
