This morning I had to dispose of my old Hoover Starlight vacuum cleaner that hoovered it’s last carpet yesterday, after sounding distinctly asthmatic for the last couple of weeks. This Hoover came from an uncle’s house when I cleared out his possessions after he died in 1981, and he had already owned the Hoover for several years by then. So I reckon it was over 40 years old. it got me thinking, what elderly or obsolete household appliances, garage equipment etc. do people have that still give good service?
Well Mrs windrush is still around but her working condition varies day to day! I suppose my pair of car ramps are almost 50 years old and used weekly, as are a lot of my tools, but regarding household stuff none of it is very old apart from a Kenwood mixer that is possibly aged 40?
Pete.
Got an old Hoover here too, even have all the original attachments to go with it, which are all in the original attachments box! Only thing changed from factory was putting a 3 pin plug on

Now that’s British built quality for ya!
I’ve got a Sony amp, was bought back in '85 and I still use it. Not really a house appliance, but I like to listen to me music…
Cheers, Patrick
I bought a push- along lawn mower in 1979 which still does very well and leaves nice stripes.
Paid £5 forrit at a junk shop in Hull near where I was making a delivery.
this saw bench belonged to my great uncle ,he used it in his lorry garage to cut wood props from the pit for the fire ,it did have a 3 phase motor on ,I fitted the V4 Wisconsin electric start petrol engine with dog clutch ,I didn’t I know I would end up buying somewhere with 3 phase ,the engine came from a water pump used in longcliffe quarry in the 60s .
I have an 1875 set square .was my grandads grandads
this is one of my favourites a bonser / lancing bagnall Hercules ,weighs 7 tonnes has 4 cylinder Perkins with torque converter ,it was new to platts Harris tuxford depot ,I gave £1200 for it ,and although I’ve spent money on making a new fuel tank ,seat ,fuel pump ,alternator ,re wired it ,track rods ,brake shoes ect ect it has earned me a lot of money on a storage contract ,it lifts 5 tonne and I still use it daily .
I regularly use this mechanical hacksaw in the garage. It was originally built by a chap in Hartington, Derbys, to construct a Flying Flea aircraft in the 1930’s and later his son had it in his garage at Hulme End. It still works well.
Pete.

We have a Moulinex Rotisserie that we bought in !974 when we married. It works perfectly and is used at least once a week. Well made and was not expensive either.

Vintage appliances■■?..Mrs GOM.
Still works as well as the day I paid 7/6d for the marriage licence. Money well spent.
I do deliveries for Hillier plants and they’ve got couple of early 80’s/late 70’s massey tractors that are still used daily I’ll try at some point to get some pics

You got a bargain there , mine cost me 12/6d although to be fair the running cost is quite reasonable . She’s like a lot of the old lorries , takes a bit of starting up in a morning and creaks and groans a bit through the day , but like old lorries i’ve become accustomed to her funny ways . Dave
