Thats correct its a totally different, secondhand engine with 450k km on it. Also comes with the modified oil pump. Ive drove it home tonight and everything seems how it should. Next week will be the test when its running at 44t.

Matt.

Hope it goes well I would have done what you did

Basically the service my local MAN dealer supply is nothing short of abysmal. I rang them when the warning lights had come on and was put through to workshop to seek advice on the problem. It went on to answerphone and so I left a message briefly explaining the problem. This was at 8am 25/3 and the return call came at 10.00 on 27/3, and then only after someone mentioned my predicament. Simply put, I wouldnt pay them in washers.

I had a breakdown over christmas 2012 which resulted in me being revovered there on 22/12. Spoke to the workshop manager and was informed they wouldn’t get onto it before they broke for Christmas. Fair play I thought so left it with them. Rung on 28th to see if they’d started it and was told by a receptionist that I had been told they wouldnt be doing anything with it till 5th Jan!!! Told her this was completely wrong as the service manager promised it would be looked at between xmas and new year.

Anyway got a phone call on 30/12 from service manager to say they’d found a fault, a broken wire in the CAN line, and that a wiring harness was required. Gave them authorisation and was told they finish at 13.00 on new years eve and it would be ready to pick up at 12 on 31/12. Being a 45min drive from my place to dealers I rang at 10.30 to confirm it’d be ready to pick up. NO ANSWER!! Rang again few more times till about 11 then lost my patience and drove through. Arrived at 11.50 and the yard was locked up and everyone had ■■■■■■ off!! So much for 13.00 finish! Eventually picked it up on 3rd January, gave them my honest opinion on their level of service and communication and left!!

Another reason why I’d always choose another Renault, the service I get from KTS Renault Trucks is fantastic, really couldn’t be better, for any problem like this they’d get me in the workshop straight away.

Anyway, glad you’re up and running, keeping fingers crossed for a trouble-free spell for you now.

how many trucks have you got

Only 1 but custom is custom. Whos to say I wont expand to say 10 or 15 in the future? Ok, I dont expect to be treated the same as Stobart or Nobby for example, but I do expect a phone call back sooner than what I got!

Matt

its shocking to say the least your right 1 ,15 or 100 your a paying customer

Don’t get too carried away with Renault Harry, their pathetic performance is how I am on first name terms with Gino Costa, MD Renault trucks.
As for most other dealerships they ■■■■,time we made a bit of effort to sort them out.

No, that’s just my experience of my own local dealership, it’s probably one of the smallest in the country and I’ve known them all personally for years, I rent my yard space from someone I’ve known since the 1980’s, I sub to a company I’ve had dealings with for 15 years, I find that in this game it’s all about building on the knowledge you’ve gained over the years as an employed driver and then picking the best of it when you go it alone.

There’s good dealerships n bad irrespective of marque this is one facter wich I take into account when purchasing a new or 2nd Han truck in my area only to come close Daf and Merc

That’s the problem with the new lorries, it used to be that you found a decent fitter and let them look after your motor from bumper to bumper. Now with all the electronics you have to go to main dealers and that’s a game of chance. All good having a decent one on the doorstep, as in Harry’s case, but only as long as you break down in the yard, out on the road you have to take it wherever is closest or incur a big tow in bill.

It does swing things towards a full R&M deal and turning them over as soon as that runs out, which doesn’t always work out best for the little guy.

In this instance, the OP has done the right thing, but if it happens again, maybe a post along the lines of “ffs I just put an engine in my lorry and it burst into glames” would be the better option

BTW, hope it goes well for you and your replacement engine

Harry Monk:
I considered MAN when I was looking for a truck but I read so many horror stories when I asked on here that I wrote the idea off very early on, I know some operate them successfully but “major mechanical failure for the second owner” was a scarily common theme.

It’s opinion only, but if I was Matt then I would be thinking “I got two years out of it and it was cheap to buy but it’s not worth spending £7,400 on it” and I’d take the £3,000 and look for something else. To be honest, I couldn’t fault a Renault, either Magnum or Premium, they both have virtually bulletproof Volvo engines and drivelines, and Premiums especially are very cheap to buy simply because Renaults don’t have badge appeal and the market is saturated with well looked-after ex major fleet trucks.

Anyway, hope Matt does sort it out either way, I’m sure he will, and I’m not the only owner operator who constantly has the thought of major mechanical failure at the back of his mind fairly regularly and constantly listens for any mechanical noise which sounds like it might mean sudden impending financial doom! :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree. First loss is your best loss, a lesson I will learn myself one day I suppose.

wow, what an interesting read!! sorry to hear about your problems but good to see that you never gave up on ur MAN and kept it!! how long have you owned the MAN?

im looking at starting up as an O/D, and its making me sway towards the hire/lease route, mainly because of heavy repair bills but also what if it happened in my first month, theres no extra funds for a while to compensate the massive repair bills!!

i was looking at the MB lease deal, looks pretty good, and also i ran a reno premium 12-plate 460 for a month, great motor, pull like a train…after all, its all ovlov, just a different cab!!

Had it since November 2011 it is my first wagon. Its had an alternator, clutch, EBS valve and a wiring harness in all that time so a great wagon till my recent problem!!

That would have been it for me. The trucks are only as good as the back up you get, what’s the point in something like 0.5 mpg better if you’re sat looking at the thing off the road? I run Daf, and Moreys in salisbury are excellent, always willing to help and try as hard as they can to help, and i’ve only got 4 trucks.Having said that, there are some useless Daf dealers as well, just seem to be less than other makes.
