Vans and tachos

Where i work we have a few vans. Some are often loaded up with equipment when shows are being done and a caravan put on the back. The vans are plated at 3.5 tonnes and often seem ‘around’ the max weight for the van. A caravan then sometimes goes on the back which will be around a tonne to a tonne and half if not more.
Are tachos needed? I know that if you go over 3.5tonnes now you need a tacho(or i think thats right) in the vehicle. Im sure ive seen Pc Angus pull over a 4x4 that was towing a car on a trailor and ask for his tacho.

So, going by the info above do the vans need tachos? Non are too new, i think the newest is a 57, and the others are much older then this. Im not sure if the age of the vehicle changes anything, im sure i read that with 7.5tonne that some after a certain age have them fitted, ones before dont.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I dont drive the vans(too young to be on the insurance) but its always made me wonder. Going by how the company works the only time they find out about these things is when they have massive fines coming their way and their reply is “well, we didnt know”

Cheers

This can…

I thought this was the case(i take it ‘the exception’ is if its not used for hire or reward?)
I had mentioned this to my manager but he has nothing to do with the transport side. It will just be a wait till someone gets caught. Van wise i once unloaded a van that was ‘around’ 3.5tonne which didnt seem to bother anyone where i wouldnt of taken the van out.

Anyway, cheers for the info. It was as i thought but i did want to double check. I think even if something was mentioned they would wait until a driver gets pulled over, and theres no chance they can say its for private use(because they will say they are working and the uniform with company name gives it away)
