Van speed limits

As to tachos in vans, I did some agency work for HSS tool hire a few months ago and their transits all have tachos - I asked if it was for when towing and was told no, its due to new laws coming in soon…!

Most hire shops use transit 460’s or transit 430’s so over 3500kg and need tacho, not a new law

I thought the law was already in that a van towing a trailer for business purposes (trailer and chipper for bark or wacker plates etc) had to run tacho’s and also have an O licence. If it’s not in yet, it’s due in shortly.
I read a thread on a forum somewhere saying it will kill a lot of small businesses as the O licence funding requirement stays the same.
Wonder if it will count for ■■■■■■? (lives in hope)

Not sure they need an O licence… definately tacho, most caravan delivery places have tacho’s in their landy’s and things now, and most plant hire places too.

I’ll check on the O licence if I get a chance.

Then Landrover changed them from N1 cars to M1 commercials,

Wrong way round , they changed them from M1 cars to N1 commercials

Sorry, I suspected I may have got the letters the wrong way around but didn’t have access to the paperwork to check.

Yes an O licence became a requirement as of 4th December last year, however the exemption for 4x4s towing a trailer remained in force.

as are things like the discover commercial

Car derived so not subject to the lower limits unless they’re now over 2t as the series 1 I had wasn’t.

A disco has always had a MAM of over 2t, it wasn’t far off 2t unladen.

Remember the 2t is Maximum Allowable Mass aka Max Gross Weight, not unladen.

You’re right, for some reason I thought the rule applied to the ULW

There is some daft wording in the exemption though cant remember exactly but i think its 4x4s under 2.5 tonne GVW or sompthing, what ever it is you cant use it for discoveries etc

Ah well stuffed on both counts then as this is also mine.

4x4 under 2040KG unladen weight - so far as I know (and so far as VOSA told me) every Landrover product (and similar Japanses 4x4 pickups etc) is considered covered under this exemption. My 110 is stated by Landrover to have an ULW of 2050KG, however this is not the same as VOSAs measure, as Landrover include the weight of a driver and a tank of fuel, as do most other manufacturers (I suppose strictly its a kerb weight). Take these out and the 110 is well under the 2040KG threshold. The only vehicle where there may be doubt is the Defender 130 which has a somewhat higher ULW. Again so far as VOSA are concerned the Discovery and Range Rover etc all conform and so are O-licence exempt when towing. The reason they gave was that it would bring thousands of famers under O licence requirements, which would be a serious problem and is not something they want to do.

No you aren’t, that vehicle is O licence exempt.

Vans with windows in the back are classed as cars.

Wrong Dave. The Vito that comes out of the factory as a big car with the 300hp engine, rear windows and 6-9 seats are still subject to the 50, 60, 70 nat speed limits. I know a man who recently found out the hard way!

Construction and use law say that a van that has side windows fitted to the rear can do 60 on normal roads etc.I checked with the DVLA.
That is a 216CDI Sprinter.

This is why the law is ridiculous at times.

You can have two vans exactly the same, doing exactly the same work but because one happens to have a side window it means the speed limits are different. Makes absolutely no sense
