I have just passed my Assessment with Royal Mail which went on for just over 4 hours.
Everything was great and no issues but I did struggled and had my mind blown with UTC time!
My back ground is driving for UPS who I have now found out trained and continue to train its drivers incorrectly with regards to tacho entry etc.
I am a new Class 2 driver but not new to driving with tachos…via UPS
I am ashamed to state I had never heard of UTC time until this morning, it has never come up in CPC training whilst I have been there which is 6 years.
So my issue this morning was some RM vehicles, especially the older ones, display UTC time and not local time (an hour difference…behind local time…yes?)
This needs to be changed but not sure what dates need to be changed.
If I come out of an old vehicle (UTC time) and go into a newer one the machine changes the hour automatically and I have no need to worry
So after entering my card into the machine in this vehicle (UTC time / old vehicle) which time do I change?
below is the procedure I have been given by RM but which do I change on the above vehicle:
Insert Digi Card. 1M entry addition, Select YES…Press OK
Change Rest to Other Work…Press OK
Change the Day/Month/Year to the same as the top line of the Tacho…Press OK
Enter the time you SIGNED OUT from your last duty…Press OK
Change Rest to ? …Press OK
The screen displays the Date/Time/Year you inserted Card.
Change to the Date/Time you SIGNED IN today…Press OK
Change Rest to Other Work…Press OK
1M confirm entry
Select Country UK…Press OK
Does any of this make sense, I have tried to explain it the best I can?
Can anyone give me an normal calibrated tacho example (new truck) and a UTC truck example so I can see the difference
I think I need to go and have a lie down in a dark room now for half an hour!!!
Ghiabox:
Wut? So its not just a case of insert your card, press no (for manual entry) press OK and get on with it?
Yep it is , op is getting knickers in a twist about UTC and Local time
As long as the time on tacho display is the same as your watch or 1 hour slow it’s ok

Ah cool, I don’t even know how to do a manual entry
UTC = GMT = British Winter time
BST = British Summer time = UTC+1
There is no need to worry about changing between new and old tachographs - It figures everything out for you - As long as the time is correctly set for local time.
Newer Tachos ask when you do a printout if you want it in UTC (Yes/No) If you choose No, it will print in local time for you
Older tacho don’t always give you the choice and only print in UTC
Printouts in UTC can be “Legal Documents” Printouts in Non-UTC supposedly are not - Not sure how this affects things in regards to the DVSA. I would probably print in UTC to be sure…

Hope I never get stopped til I learn
^^^^^^^
unless your doing euro and different countries, then just bung your card in,then remove it when your finished.you have no reason to ever do a manual entry unless you want to document a story to cover an infringement…theres no requirement to have you do one,so until you acquire a phd in tacho ops, simply dont do one unless you want to be a superduper duddly doogood.theres no offence for not having manual records, but if you go over your time or tip/load/move out of hours, then a few lies written on the back will help to cover the reason as to why.
in that case,a story helps back up the infringement and may tend to sway the vostapo from issuing an offence.but there is no offence for not having a manual entry just for the sake of having one.

I used to be the same at UPS…ram it in and keep pressing ok…then off you go
This is apparently a Royal Mail requirement while working Agency for them, they check it every day. You even have to download your digi card before and after the shift…so the trainer told me and showed me
if you dont care about the job then bung it in ,do the shift, let them dig you up on it ,then tell them to get a professor to show you the procedure with the instructions written down, and if not they wont want you back.
obviously if its a job your wetting your pants to keep, then your attitude will be somewhat different, but you just know theyre doing it that way because some ■■■■ in the office thought it would be a good idea and theres nobody with a clue to contradict them.but their ball, their rules if you can be assed with it.
If you’re that bothered about it just change the settings on the tacho head to display local time instead of UTC. As said, the tacho will always record in UTC regardless.

They said i would be sacked on the spot if i changed it like that. They have records of which vehicles have this method and which don’t
