I now have a spare truck and its one I really dont want to sell .Ive had to park it up as i have no more space left on my olicence so I’ve sorned it taken it off my olicence but I would like to keep it moving does it have to be on my olicence if I re taxed and just used it for taking trailers to and from the garage.
If you are not carrying any goods you don’t need o license & you can tax it private hgv
If you tax it private, legally you won’t be able to use it to pull trailers, a trailer is considered to be goods on an artic.
Providing it is empty trailer he is ok,
Driving schools use them taxed private,
A guy I know used to collect & deliver trailers, when plod stopped him once, he was done for carrying a trailer piggy back,
He was told the bottom trailer was ok, but the one on top was classed as a load.
It is a GREY area,
It can be legal/illegal to use it with trailer its all depends on the Officer’s question and your answer.
But technically you should have minimum restricted O licenses to move around this trailers empty or loaded.
(1) the trailers are getting moved around for business purpose, and that fall under hire or reward.
(2) as a truck dealer you are moving new purchased or sold trailers about, it falls under the rule of restriction license.
… my suggestion to you is to register your truck as recovery/breakdown truck then you have more chances of not having problem, as recovery/breakdown are exempt from MOT/O license and cheap road tax.
hope the above will help you in any how
