We have a driver who has been booked to collect a load in an artic with 4.2metre box trailer from the Tarmac Quarry at DE6 4PH, which appears to be on Bullhurst Lane, Weston Underwood, between Ashbourne and Derby.
Does anybody have info on access / height / overhanging branches etc etc. Are we going to manage to get to it in one piece?
We’re coming up from Cannock, up the A38 to Derby I think, and after that it’s in the hands of the gods.
If anybody knows the best way in (or routes to avoid at all costs!) please let me know!
Never been there before BUT having a look on Google Earth I reckon they expect vehicles to come in from the South through Weston Underwood, as the sign’s are made facing that way.
My HGV satnav also seems to suggest going in that way, but my phone is on the blink at the moment and I can’t zoom in so cant see the exact route and have left the iPad in the car.
As has been said though, I’d give 'em a ring just to be safe. Number is 01332 868 400 according to their sign.
Thanks guys. So probably leave the A38 on the Kedleston Rd and wiggle up past the golf course then?
I so hope he gets there in one piece. I haven’t time to check the route step by step. He’s a good driver, so he should have his head screwed on. But he will struggle to turn around if he gets stuck!
I finally found time to run along the route on google maps using street view / satelite view. It is a touch narrow in places, with a couple of tight-ish bends, but nothing serious. No bridges. So we’ll just be knocking a few low branches down maybe. I pity the bloke who follows our driver along the road
Hopefully the roof will hold on the trailer, as I could do without the bill for damages!
There are no weight limits or anything too low along the route you are suggesting, He could turn left up the A52 towards Ashbourne from Markeaton Island go into Brailsford then turn right onto Lukes Lane, Mercaston Lane and Intakes lane before turning right at the junction which would take him to Tarmac.
The only over head structure is the conveyor belt at mercaston quarry but there is no sign so should be over 16ft. that route is a bit twisty but ok.
This sounds like the old top floor plant. Used to run out of there with Canute on the flooring beams.
The route we always used and the best way in for your driver is A38 north, straight over Markeaton roundabout (mcdonalds), then take the first slip off the A38 (not far after the roundabout), left at the traffic lights at the top of the slip, follow along till a rod forks off left signed Weston Underwood and Hulland Ward. Follow this road through Weston Underwood Village then the road climbs and the plant is on the right.
Should be no probs with the trailer, its a well used road, odd tight spots but bad. They used to run extendables out of there, upto 60ft.
As Henry’s Cat says. That’s the way our wagons go in. No prob’s at all except a couple of tight places, when leaving the site the designated route out (as signposted inside the exit gate) as approved by the local council,is back the same way.
Mega thanks to everybody who has had an input. He managed to get there and back in one piece. And he’s going again tomorrow! Fingers crossed this could turn into a nice bit of work. He gets to sit at the quarry all day and twiddle his thumbs while they load him up (handball). Mite be a bit boring, but my other half always said that’s the best version of getting paid: getting paid to sit on your bum and do nothing! In this weather he could even take a deck chair and top up the tan on his left arm to match.

Only if he has got some Hi Viz suncream, bloody health and saftey mad them lot.
yeah, as above, up through kedleston from Derby, its ‘Topfloor’, used to run out of there alot till they closed it. We cleared our office out last weekend, and i think most of our trailers are out of there now.
