If you are away for two weeks what does it matter where it is based?

You might get home quicker.
The point is that if you do this, it’s got to be because you want to do it and are not desperate to get home.
I used to go away for weeks and months at a time, I stopped doing it when my children were born and now they are nearly fully-grown I am preparing to do it again. I want to do it again.
If you feel the same then I would say the wages you mentioned were entirely reasonable. For sure I could earn more driving the Tesco lorry at night and at weekends but, as hard as this is for some people to get their heads around, quality of life means at least as much to me as financial remuneration.
Whatever you are being offered, there will be plenty of people that will do it for less. What drivers have to remember is while there is so much competition between hauliers for the work that there is, plenty of good competent drivers from east european will do it for far less. if you can average £550 a week and its long term, then I reckon its a good wage how things are at present.

Harry Monk:

What Harry said. Learned that lesson the hard way…
The Rustler:
If you decide you don’t want to take this … drop me a line … i’ll do it
never mind you, ill do it!!?
I’ve had 30+ PM’s from people wanting the info.
It’s so true that however low the wages, there’s always someone else that’ll do it for less.
And how many from them were Eastern Europeans?
Riho:

not one I’m afraid
I’m not saying that I wouldn’t employ an eastern European- that would be illegal- but I would insist that any driver I employed spoke fluent English and was able to explain the rules of cricket.

Especially the duckworth Lewis method. It’s vital to employment I think.

Absolutely.
I would have a few other ways of filtering out unsuitable applicants. Crewcuts, nylon trousers and white socks would virtually guarantee that there wouldn’t be a second interview.
‘‘able to explain the rules of cricket’’
Bugger that rules me out of ever workin for Sir Harry then, borin’ bloody game an worse than watching paint dry
Booked in when??:

Hopefully your company wont come to the point, when it needs to employ a driver.

Why, because I would prefer it if my driver spent his wages in the local economy rather than sending it to Poland or Lithuania?
As usual this comes down to personal preference and what income you need or are prepared to work for.
I’d always prefer tramping to day work. I’d prefer tramping to Spain than around UK. And I’d be quite happy with nice clean fridge work.
As for the money I don’t have a big mortgage or high rent and the kids are all old enough to have run away from home, so I’m in the position where my preference of job could rule over my need of higher income.
I often hear of the big money some drivers are earning but most of the drivers I know are taking home about £450 a week for that type of work plus maybe a few bob for being weekended and that doesent seem too far off the mark from this job so Im not surprised at plenty of drivers being interested.
