Tyne & Wear LGV

Has anyone done their test in a T&W LGV manual vehicle recently or do they just say anything so you’ll run your cash through their bank account and make their balance sheets look better?

I’m interested in acquiring my HGV licence. I went in for a test drive with this company and explicitly stated I wanted a manual rig. Test drive in a manual went well so I book a training course to be done in a manual. Time arrives for my course and there’s no manual available!

Company are apologetic for the [zb] up and offer a auto-box replacement vehicle, stating they’re far easier to drive and provide the same licence at the end. I’m not interested in easy. I’d specifically requested a manual box for a very specific reason, I’ll be driving manual rigs and need to learn!

Anyway, the company say they’re retiring all manual vehicles and replacing with auto’s so I take a refund (delayed for 14 days) and split. I know there are other companies offering manual vehicles at this point as I’ve done my research. In the meantime life happens and it transpires that I don’t get the opportunity to proceed with the HGV driver training after all. However, time goes by and I end up contacting Tyne & Wear LGV again around a year later when I’ve got my ducks in a row. Surprisingly, they’ve got manual vehicles again.

Why must it be a manual

No matter what you train in the chances are that you might never come across that exact gearbox (manual or auto) ever again in your career

agreed,

I appreciate sometimes issues such as breakdowns etc may mean it’s necessary to change the training vehicle but if the chaps paying and has agreed to train in ■■ type of vehicle that agreement should be honoured regardless of the logic behind it

Having said that they offered him an alternative and gave him a refund - lot better that some training providers would do.

I would stay away from Tyne & Wear there not that good when I done my class 2 there several years back I had 6 instructors in 5 days 1 of them even took me down a road that I shouldn’t be on at the end of the road you have to mount the curb he had a smirk on his face about it

these are much better tynesidetrainingservices.co.uk

Did my DCPC and ADR training 2 weeks ago with TTS. (Was also warned off T&W years ago too…)

While in the class room, we all saw the delivery of a ‘new to them’ MAN tractor unit. (61 plate I think it was).

Fully auto though.

We were told that examiners can now watch you more regarding your observations / mirrors etc…

A little bit of urban myth creeping in there! Makes no difference whether the vehicle is manual or auto, observations and mirrors remain the same.

You got an ‘average’ price for going from class C, to C+E Peter…?

Taking in regional variations thought too?

Probably be the usual 4/5 days then test…?

Our normal rate for CE from C is £1450 (less 10% Trucknet user discount). The Lincoln introductory rate is just £999. The lucky person winning the prize draw will pay only £500 for CE. And that has to be the bargain of the year!

I don’t think there’s a cheaper option available from a DVSA Accredited Centre.

I really don’t know an average price throughout the country but I’m sure there will be cheaper than us and I know there’s plenty more expensive.

Cheapest is not always best.

I’d better get saving then…

Thanks Pete.
