TurnSafe Mirror

I never came across one myself, but seemed like not a bad idea in principle.
Any of you ever come across a vehicle fitted with one, or was it just another failed project ■■

I think MAN had them on early TGAs. I remember a button on the door control panel but I never found one that worked.

You must’ve been a lucky git getting all the motors with the optional extras…

Does anyone remember the twin lens “Zanetti” mirrors which used to be fitted to wagons back in the 70’s. You set it up so that the outside mirror of the two was the one to see along the side of the vehicle (the one mainly used) and the inside one showed a view of the area further out from the side, so you could see where the trailer was going when it was bent round, or see vehicles in the blind spot when they were alongside you. They went out of use when the really big convex mirrors (Volvos seemed to be the first to fit them on the F86’s) started to be fitted to vehicles. I had a small set of Zanettis fitted to a VW camper I used to have back then. I heard a rumour that they were outlawed for some reason by the EEC

Probably work great till the first moment one get smacked in use, then look all over the place.

Whilst we’re on the subject of mirrors. What was the first truck you drove that had remote adjustable mirrors ■■?
My first one was an Iveco Turbostar mid to late 80s. Thought I was in USS Enterprise in that bloody thing as I recall…

Seems an extremely good idea. No doubt they will put them on trucks here in 40 years  as it is we do have motorised mirrors on even the oldest piles of junk here.

We don’t have them on trucks here Pat.
Probably ruled out due to the cost factor.

I asked our fleet engineer why we didn’t have electric mirrors on the rigids and his response was they cost twice as much to replace when you smash them.

It was a button that appeared to show a picture of the mirrors swinging out on the door top controls so I’m just assuming that it was something similar to turnsafe. But like i said, I never found one that worked so I’m guessing the button was only there but the function was an optional extra.

I wondered what that button did…Ive been pressing it off and on for 12 months and havent seen anything happening

MAN and ERF used to (may still) have this, when it worked it just put the mirror as far left as it’d go, so when blindsiding, you’d hit the button when you lost the rear of trailer and it’d go as far left and you could see behind again, hit the button again and it returns to it’s last point.

Worked on all but one truck I’ve driven with it, that was a 53 plate ERF at Roadways, but it was 7yrs old by then
