Javiatrix:
In which situation the diversion signs take priority, therefore the left lane method is inappropriate.
But,like many others, you originally said that it was ‘definitely’ a left lane job because the ahead arrows on the approach actually mean right and it’s a bit late to change your mind on entry to the roundabout. To the point where like I said although I prefer the highway code version I usually follow your idea and use the left lane to turn right there because it causes too much aggro among the ‘advanced driver’ left laners to do it ‘properly’.Depending on the definition of ‘properly’ that is.Which by my reckoning,at that point, means left lane A3 Southbound only regardless and right lane turn right.Just as the highway code suggests.
Having said that if it was approaching the roundabout from the opposite direction northbound A3 exit slip then left lane to turn right would be correct.Because unlike the southbound exit that’s how the roundabout is marked.Although, like the southbound exit slip, there’s still no way of knowing that from the approach markings which show left lane ahead and left and right lane ahead. While right lane actually means return Southbound in the direction you just exited from only according to the roundabout markings on entry.
If I commit to pulling on a roundabout and a car comes right round with no indicator I actually stop now and point at their indicator. It will make no difference but makes me feel better.
I think a lot of problems are caused by the enigma of certain road markings. For example, on the sliproad approaches we’ve been looking at, it’s not uncommon to see a ‘left and straight ahead’ marking on the left lane, and a ‘straight ahead only’ marking on the right lane. Now, if I had it MY way, the lanes would be marked PROPERLY, meaning left lane is left and straight ahead (back onto the carriageway), and right lane is right ONLY. I think a lot of it is forced to be interpreted by each individual driver. For example, in the absence of a ‘right’ marking on these roundabouts, where both lanes contain a ‘straight ahead’ marking, I’ll treat that as following it straight ahead but ‘round to the right’, because there’s no other option it could be!
As you say, by the time you’re actually ON the roundabout it’s a bit late for markings to start telling you the REAL meaning of the lanes!
Certain roundabouts in my area I use the left lane to turn right, large roundabouts that if you are on the inside lane you get crazy drivers overtaking you on the roundabout like a racetrack in a bad blindspot in my big XF. I rather try to keep traffic on my good side where I can see what they are upto, its a lot safer IMO, but I never draw along side other trucks at junctions or roundabouts, safer to keep staggered, I’ve had some fannies in rigid and buses and arctics trying to force there way up the side of me, I’ve stopped wanting to punch their ■■■■■ in and just laugh hoping they crash into me

In today’s conveniently diverse society there is no such thing as ‘…common sense…’ because very little is common any more - and is why soooo many get soooo rattled out there on those gladiatorial battle-grounds, mate
As we bicker, the Government (LOL) does as it ■■■■ well pleases because we are easily ignored as we bicker among ourselves
Eg., Perhaps recall how ‘The People’s Front of Judea’ & ‘The Judean People’s Front’ bickered as Rome ruled them all regardless: Well it’s Brussels and Cameron’s lickspittle Westminster Council doing similar upon us today

But what you’re saying there contradicts your idea of using left lane to turn right while confirming the highway code procedure of right lane only to turn right. The fact is wherever a situation of left lane turn right applies you’ve then made the right lane redundant by making it at best return in opposite direction only or at worse,as in the case of Tolworth and New Malden,if the right lane markings are applied literally,it means no exit continue around roundabout in perpetuity.

I think you can now safely add Beijing to Brussels there. As for roundabouts the highway code seems to have taken the only logical option and ‘should’ realistically apply in all cases.
After reading this lot and also have been in situations as not knowing which lane at unfamiliar roundabouts shouldn’t there be some consultation between the road markers and the highway code?
There are many roundabouts where the road sign contradicts the road markings road marking are useless because when you get to them in heavy traffic you can’t even see them
One in Rotherham (Canklow) has just been changed for some STUPID reason It is just after Volvo (on your left). There used to be 2 lanes for straight on (right lane for u turn from Volvo) no problem. Now they have made a dog leg situation where you need to be in the right lane on approach and then it splits into 2 lanes accessible by road markings from the right hand lane (locals will be at risk by unfamiliar approaching incorrectly). Effectively the way I see it they are going to cause an unnecessary queue at a junction that has worked bloody marvellous for years
205:
Rule 185
When reaching the roundabout you should
give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights
check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining
watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off.
Rule 185: Follow the correct procedure at roundabouts
Rule 186
Signals and position. When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave.
When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout
you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.
OR… follow the green car exactly and spend the seat of the day waiting for the recovery company to lift your trailer as yyou will have couped it off of the black and white chevrons and tipped the lot on its side…
rule 1…just go for it,split and hog the lanes, and give yourself plenty of space to keep your area clear of lemmings.( being on irish or flipflop plates always helps)…

Brussels with Beijing is like what a malarial mosquito is to a dragon’s ■■■■
The dragon can and will do as it pleases - although the mosquito is both unwanted and expensive to manage & a parasitic irritant bringing zero tangible quality to UK, cultural life (uber-liberal roundabout confrontation!?) and is best rid of
That suggested, Brussels & dragons are both mythically revered by dreamers, though, eh

I see a slope in the green car so its probably going to china and the blue one is heading to brussels

you would never make it round there anyway, your wee donkey would be up on the middle eating them flower beds

Blimey if I’ve read it right you’re saying that being ruled by zb Xi and Kim would bring ‘tangible quality of life’ to the UK and would be preferable to being ruled by zb Merkel.Whereas I’d say that they are both along the lines of parasitic mosquitoes and fleas and the discovery that both transmit AIDS.While everyone knows that dragons took refuge in Wales because they weren’t welcome here either.
M40 south to join A34 south you can use all 3 lanes to turn right as marked up on the road, you do often see traffic wanting to re join the m/way from the middle lane having to go round again!

What chance has this “grey-soup” nation ever gonna have of bringing quality to anything anymore when we’ve got roundabout confusion fogging our EU-programmed brains, man…!

Happy Keith Gold. Have the Plain English Campaign awarded you any of their awards yet? Travesty if not
One thing I have noticed are those drivers that take the right turn at a roundabout to the expert level by driving round it the wrong way! 4 times in the last 2 years I have come across cars doing this!
