should be more like france and take a stand to this theft but oh no old fruit stiff upper lip
If you count everything from buying the Highway code to gaining your C+E and buying a Hi-Viz with sleeves and reflective strips because the vest type are no good any more I would say it costs about £3,500.

I would agree and that would be with a full house of 1st time passes!!! Blimey!!!
Don’t want to hijack the post but…What did TNET users pay for their HGV/LGV training & tests and would they go through it again considering all the hoops to jump through and current prices - to become…a lorry driver??
I think my Class 1 training cost me £800-00 in 1991.
PSV (1992) - test fee only as I already had medical/provisional from HGV application & worked for local bus company…RESULT!!!
I think I would go through both again - if I had the finances available…big IF!!!
Anyone got a figure for going from car license to c+e recently. Just curious of total cost with reading material, modules , test fees lessons, clothing , cards and on and on.

Ok, rough figures from memory:
Medical £40
ipad app for theory £5
Theory £35
HPT £15
Cat C attempt 1 (£1400 ) - failed
Cat C attempt 2( £400 ) - passed
Cat C+E (£1200) - passed
Digi Card (£38)
35 hours CPC (in process)
I reckon it’s going to be £3500+ once DCPC paid for. Hope that helps. BTW I hear there is a cracking deal going down at Peterborough at the moment and if you have £150 deposit I would book now
I can’t remember how many car lessons I had but it was quite a few, could never be arsed to put in for my test (theory and practical).
Hgv cost me.
Provisional entitlement + picture update £20
Medical £39
HGV Theory Test £35
HGV Hazard perception £15
HGV Assessment Cat C £40
HGV Training Cat C 5 day course including test fee £1200
HGV Cat C retest x 3 @ £250 each
DCPC Module 2 test fee £30
DCPC Module 4 training + test fee and use of vehicle £200
HGV Cat C+E assessment £40
HGV Cat C+E Training 5 day course including test fee in an Artic £1300
Digi Card £20
Oh and a couple of books for theory reference and DCPC which came to about £40.
Think that was what it cost me.
Car licence was 2 lessons @ £2.00 + £2.00 for the car to use on the test, cant remember how much the test was (1977).
Truck was £175.00 inc test fee, training and use of truck.
It is a rip off these days and all just to do a job for not that much pay.

which you can’t get anyway for the 1st 2 years, total waste of time if you’re paying for it yourself with no work lined up

I was lucky, when I passed my Cat C in July 2012, my then employer (co-op) gave me 1 day a week on the road to get experience. Then I got made redundant and went on agency in Spalding, was told if I passed my class 1 they would take me on full time, 5 weeks later I passed C+E in July 2013 and they kept their word.
what about everyday costs ■■? most people in normal jobs eat their evening meal and breakfast at home, truck drivers away all week have to eat out twice a day, that’s got to be £10 per day, easy.

Nobody if forcing anybody to pay whatever it costs to get a class 1. Anyone who thinks it’s too much is free not to bother.

OK, lets draw an example…
You in a Tesco Store earning £7.50 an hour stacking shelves. You are one of the lucky ones with a full time contract, you do 37.5 hours giving you a weekly sum of £281.25 (14.6K pa). Overtime is sparse and cannot be relied on. You have no skills or qualifications and you struggle to make ends meet but have £2000 in savings for a rainy day.
This £2000 would pay for your LGV training & initial CPC and you could do it with just a week off work. You could then feasibly earn £20K for starters, so the cost of training has paid for itself in just a matter of months. Alright, so your working long hours, but taking home a dam sight more to your family than in the vast majority of unskilled jobs even if their hourly rates are higher. To maintain this income you need to find £60-£80 a year to do a course, which isn’t that hard. & your employer would likely sort you out anyway.
I can easily see why people do it.

I think of it like this, most workers have to look at the same boring scene, out of the same boring window, the same boring faces of their colleagues. I came over Woodhead Pass this morning on my way back from Warrington, just as the sun was rising, that view was priceless! To top it off I got paid for it!

no they don’t, but anyway, that’s what the night out money is for

If he earns 20k he’ll be worse off, tax credits will go right down and he’ll have to pay full rent, prescriptions, dentists the list goes on, if that’s all your gonna earn stay at Tesco and watch your kids grow up with your eyes, rather than with pictures your mrs took.
From medical to class 1 i was around £2800 , and everything in between , because of my age Grandfather rights sorted the 7.5t with trailers ,paid for the Medical and class 2 then Class 1, digi card and the DQC were taken care of by present employer , had retest for my Class 1 but passed my Class 2 first time , a still think for me it was worth it , as I want to be a trucker , got most of my money back on overtime Gritting the roads , although it was a mild winter ,still clawed a good chunk back and got some experiance over the last 6 months , will move into haulage full time next year , still think it was worth it to me anyway , personal ambition getting the Class 1 vocational licence .
