Trucking and marriage

My parents are still under 60 and have been married 40 years. My mum at least puts it down to my dad being away so much in the past. Thankfully though those days are behind him and he’s as happy as larry at home every night. Which I’m really pleased about.

Something I often hear is worries about missing your kids growing up. My Day was away for a lot of my childhood but he was still an amazing Dad who I count as one of my best friends now. A good Dad is a good Dad be him home or away. I’d rather have my brilliant Dad who I saw on the odd weekend and went with in the holidays than a bad one home all the time.

I have 3 kids who live in Dublin. Whilst chauffeuring, I missed my daughters youngest years. She was only 10 when me and her mother parted. She is now 17 and I miss her terribly. The only time in my life where I put money before my kids. I hate myself for that.

How many of you trampers on here have been divorced directly or indirectly because of the job keeping you away from home?
A few of my mates have lost their marriage through it, either by their wives getting bored of them being away, or by themselves getting found out seeing somebody while away, others say their marriages have lasted because they are away a lot, and maybe there’s something in that, as for me, and the reason I ask, is today I’ve been married for 29 years,(not sure if I’m boasting or complaining  ) all of which I have been away tramping UK & Europe,( is this some kind of record or can anybody beat it) the down side of this is I have missed a lot of my kids growing up, but still managed to stay with the wife.

I can understand why so many and im not saying all, but alot of the male drivers on here are divorced or cant hold down a relationship, because being a female driver, and a hgv 1 at that, evey time I pull up or tip or park somewhere there is always someone that wants to “Get to know me better” grrrr, I drive because I love driving, I enjoy the varied work I do, What I dont like are the comments about, being a female driver. and the amount of times I hear, “so you like handling big things do you love” you can imagine what comment comes next.!!!

I was always taught that a “Standing P***K has no conscience” it seems so true in this male dominated work place !!!

Similar situation to my own although I’m a lot older.

My daughters have a saying “Anyone can be a father,it takes something special to be a Dad”

Think about it its about Quality not quantity…

Can’t ever recall giving a female driver that kind of patter. I had a riveting chat at Rugby truckstop recently with a female trucker. She was ever so nice and not at all women’s lib.

Its not about womens lib and all that, I enjoy doing a job, I get told as a female I should be at home looking after my kids !!!, “what are you doing working in a mans world !!!” etc etc etc the list is endless

Perhaps it jealousy seeing a female drive reverse onto an awkward bay in one go, instead of doing 5 - 6 - 7 etc shunts !!!

I think anyone can do any job, as long as they CAN do it.

I’ve seen a fat bloke who can’t get out of his cab and asks passers by to swipe his card at the docks. I know a tiny guy who can rope, sheet, throw straps over 20 high cheps etc, then a 6’ odd guy who can’t and even had to have the tiny guy diverted to help him strap his pallets :unamused:

I will help anyone, male or female, but I won’t do the job for anyone, if they can’t do it, I’ll show them or help them, if they still can’t do it, it’s time to move on to another career IMHO.

You sound like you’re either really good looking or think you are, but a lot of places I go have a lot of good looking girls, so I’m not sure why you get that attitude off the men you meet.

I think my wife has had enough of me being away monday-friday/saturday. Only been doing it for about 6 months. By Thursday afternoon or Friday, I’m gagging to go home - but by saturday afternoon I can’t wait to get back in my crappy truck!

Oh I do it all the time. I really am quite a ladies man…

Is it April fools again? :open_mouth:

works both ways though.
When night trunking we had 3 women driver working with us. One was simply pleasant and got on with the job, the second was really nice and would flirt a bit in a way that let you know it was all banter and the third was a stunner.
sadly she had a mouth like a docker and it was embarrasing when she came into the services to meet up with us all and would call across the cafe in a loud voice something along the lines of " just taken my F… headlight out on the f… pallets the dozy c… had left in the doorway.
You could see all the other drivers in the services thinking "what the …? "
If a woman acts that way then she really only has herself to blame if the guys get a certain idea about her.

I used to work at Panic with a girl. When I split with the wife, I house shared with her.(Innocent)
She swore like a docker too. Drank/smoked/took weed. Came home with different blokes every weekend. Met truckers in laybys on her run. Horrible she was.

She got the push for being ■■■■■■ and getting involved in a police chase one Sunday. I moved out the same week!!!

Its probably off topic but Im reminded of a time when I used to run computer gear into PC World on the brackmills industrial site some years ago when I was doing a bit of filthy stinking agency driving… :unamused:

Anyhow I usually got down there for about 2300 would book in and stick the trailer on a bay wipe my muddy boots all over the dash   and then I used to sit there watching the same trucks coming and going most nights.

One truck in particular had a very stunning looking lady driver and would struggle badly to get the trailer on the bay, whilst the rest of the “Drivers” sat watching and coming out with usual carp that we all tend to do from time to time ,you know the thing “bloody women” etc etc…I couldnt stand the pain much longer :unamused: so got off my fat arse and jumped out to watch her back.

After popping the trailer on the bay we went for a coffee when the first thing I noticed was when she passed me my cup was that she had very large hands for a woman… :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Yep you guessed it she was actually a He   …and a qualified GP who had for some reason changed career paths… :open_mouth: :open_mouth: She had obviously had the “OP”,now none of that has the slightest thing to do with the OP but it still makes me smile to think that all those drivers were taking the ■■■■ out of the “Woman Driver” and it was in fact a bloke…

AS I SAID EARLIER, its not all male drivers are like that, but it seems that abot 90 percent !!!
