TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

harry:
Steyr is Austrian.

And they make the BMW X3 under licence for BMW

harry:
The Steyr was a good truck. Comfortable & powerful V8. V.reliable. The Chinese are still making them under licence . The later Albions were lumps of junk. Where the Lada thing comes from is a mystery. Steyr is Austrian.

One of the few trucks I haven’t seen the inside of, anyone got some interior pictures of one?

hi spardo,

this is the only pic i have of the inside of a styer.

cheers

Although STEYR’s could be supplied with a 350 or 420 V8, I believe all those sold in the UK had the straight-six 310.

Oh dear, what a horrid motor

Evening all, when Cliff Groves, ex Scania, started the Steyr operation in GB, to give him a lift, I bought a couple of 4x2 rigids, and fitted them with Soloman fridge bodies. They were very good quality, light, economic, manouverable, and a delight to drive, and popular as a daily rental vehicle. I would have purchased more!!

My old friend Pat Blackburn, (RIP), Chambers and Cook, was really pleased with his 310, as eco1943 says. In fact I do not know anyone who operated a Steyr, who was unhappy with their purchase. A very good lorry builder, who was in its time at the cutting edge of technology.

Sadly, or Munich friends cut it all stone dead, when they acquired Steyr, as they did so well with Bussings designs previously. It would be interesting to speculate just how successfull Cliff Groves, (RIP), would have been with Steyr, had not MAN taken them over.

As gb1 says, all the UK tractors were straight 6s.(and very good performers, and that cab was a really comfortable work place).Sadly only a few of us were to enjoy it!! Are we exclusive■■?

Anyway, to you all, good luck, health, and happiness for 2013, I shall raise a large glass of Bollinger to each and everyone of you…and do keep the memories coming!! Cheerio for now.

Thank you all for the pictures and the info on the Steyr cab. It seems there was plenty of storage space in the high roof although it is no surprise that in that short cab the bunk is fairly narrow.

But then, the F 89 bunk was a similar size and received no complaints from me…or the lady who later became my wife.

This is the best I can do. Flat Top V8 Swiss reg; Good engine, good gearbox, good suspension & cab.

The bottom bunk was, indeed, very narrow - too narrow for a decent night’s sleep - so I used the top bunk which was as wide as any of today’s
products. Access to it was easy via a substantial table/step in the centre of the cab. Mine had duplicate controls for the night-heater and interior lights, so once ‘up top’, there was theoretically no need to get back down.
Above the drivers seat was a large cupboard - big enough to take a portable TV and all the rest of my baggage that would normally sit on a top bunk.

GB1, yes you were right there was loads of room in the cab, there was no junk floating around in my cab. Pat did like the Steyr, for a 310 it had some go and it was good on the gas, My particular truck also ran on air suspension which made it a pleasant drive no bucketing around. How people can judge a truck without ever driving one beats me, all I can say is it never let me down. Amazing how many people on here worked at Chambers and Cook that in twenty years I never knew, perhaps a case of ships in the night maybe.

Stefan Truck Forum try this out sum great photos of the middle east and great photos of astran and the astran lads

Odd that Pat Blackburn only bought one to my knowledge, I think the only thing really wrong with them from a drivers point of view, is they looked ugly!!

Hullo all,
I loved the look of the Steyr, fabulous I still think so, although I never owned one as I loved my DAF’s too much. The nearest I ever got to a Steyr was coming home one trip. I got off the Ferry at Ancona drove up to Turin, and was just about 10 kms North of Suza on the road to Mont Cenis when I came upon this Steyr, it was one of Chambers and Cook, broke down, and Old Guy with a mop of Grey hair, sat there looking fed up and reading a Book. I obviously pulled over and walked back. “What’s the trouble Drive” I asked, a bit aggressive he said " I don’t know , the effin thing is boiling over". I got underneath for a bit of a nose, and there was his Fanbelt twisted round the Pulley and in a thousand strips. “That’s not such a big problem” I said " I’ve got a few spare belts and one of them is one of those temporary adjustable things, we’ll soon have you going" I got a sort of a grunt from him, no thank you, kiss my arse or anything. " Where’s your Jack handle Drive ? " another grunt, so I went and got mine. “Is all in the cab OK mate ?”, yes course it is he said. “Right up we go”, ( I still go into fits when I think of it ) well, I’d just about tipped the Cab up to have enough room to get in, when Crash, his poxy television had come flying off one of the bunks, hit the screen, cracked the screen and demolished itself into the bargain. Well this bloke went ■■■■■■ hairless, “Look what you’ve done, you ■■■■■■ idiot” I thought he was going to have a heart attack on the spot. He kept on and on and on, so I took my Jack Handle back, chucked it in the trailer box, climbed back into my cab and ■■■■■■ off and left him there. Maybe he’s still there I don’t know, miserable old Sod. Some people you just can’t help.
Cheers, Archie.

Nice one

C&C had three Steyr’s I drove one myself Brian (bubbles) and young Steve drove the others, two very good friends of mine, I have little hair Brian had mousey hair and Steve had blond hair, we drove these trucks till they were kept at home on UK work only, the reason C&C did not buy any more was that MAN took over and so no more Steyr’s.

Saviem you must have a large stock of Bollinger as it seems there is 38304 members but I guess you will lose count once yo get into three figures
but I am sure you do your best and enjoy it
