TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

I f you think that Merc looks good you want to see his Lambretta
I know kettle black lol

A few of the old firms

its still there aint it.i thought they called it the skislope

Yeah I heard it called that too.

Going up and down the Blanc used to be a lot more interesting when what is now the one way road down was two way and where the little steel bridge is on the right just before you go through the viaduct arch, that was two way as well without enough room for two trucks to pass at once which led to some arguments also some ripped tilts on the rocks which stuck out just before turning onto the bridge. In fact if anyone wants to go on Google Earth and enter street view it shows just how entertaining it could be.

komatsu 450:

That looks like a Patterson barrel, was he lost?

hiya,
Might have even used the self same sheets and although this is the wrong thread and even though the load is a bit humpty backed I think/know I could have still done a much tidier job than that poor advert for the “noble art”.

As an extra blast from the past, the trailer number gives it away as one of the old Jess B. Woodcock trailers - Bowker bought Jess B. Woodcock (Shipping) Limited sometime in the 70s, and the trailers kept their old JBW numbers because of the carnets. This one is JBW12033.

I remember the brass plate with the Woodcock name on it used to stick out amongst all the others on the front door of the head office!

What’s going on here then?

I’ve seen this photo of the Merc with all that stuff on before, either In Trucking International Magazine ( as It was called back in the '80’s) or Truck & Driver.
I think the caption with the picture read: How does he see where he’s going??
They go onto mention that all except one of the spotlights worked.

Used to see many-a-truck with those ‘Les Routiers’ Stickers…

adr:
A couple of through the windscreen shots just for the memories!

Middle pic is definately “the stilts” at Clueses.

I took this photo in the early 1980’s. I also saw it at night, and it was like being Microwaved as it came towards me :sunglasses:
There were at least 23 spotlights and they all worked…bar one!!! Crazy Frenchman.

Bet it made his alternator belt squeal when he switched that lot on!

The Bakehouse looks a bit quite nowadays, maybe the A1 lads should hold their reunion there this year  .

I don’t know what happened there  I keep getting two street views, one taken in the spring and the other looks like it was taken in the winter  .

Hullo Steve,
Yes it does look a bit forlorn doe’nt it, only two lorries there and even they are’nt DOW’s  I don’t suppose anybody goes that way now though. Monsieur Raymond (the mayor) has probably passed on by now too.

Cheers, Archie.

Hello Archie, you know how it was, the Dow lads could of been in The Algerians near Point Dain if it was Cous Cous night.
The MAT lads and The Bowker Boys would of pushed on through to The Monkey House and Tony Feblands Marauders could of been at any Routiers between Calais and Prato  .
Yes, I suppose Monsieur Raymond must have baked his last loaf by now :frowning: .
Did you ever hear of the story that some of the girls who worked there came from the local orphanage or was that just something somebody told me after a couple of bottles of van rouge  .

Best regards Steve.

Hullo Steve,
Aye happen your right mate, there were some good eating (and drinking) places en route in those days. I very rarely used the Bakehouse though, I used to go down the back road from Tournus D975, there were a few good places down there to stop at plus a brilliant Italian Routier. And of course if you missed any of these, then you could have a really entertaining, good night before you reached Bourg en Bresse. ( wait for it ) at Jayat
I never heard about those poor Orphan girls though, I could then have stopped there and given them a bit of fatherly love. Always miss out I do.
Hope all the water has subsided on the East Coast, I was pondering whether to go there this year, as I’ve been chucked out of Brasil till next March.
Cheers, Archie.
