Hi relluf. Like the Beresfords Atki. Did you know a bloke called Mick McGuire that drove for them. I had a few nights out with him in UK in early eighties. I especially remember being in Southampton one night, parked by the baths and we had been in the Juniper Berry, when we came out instead of walking round and down the steps to the lorry park, He jumped off the wall and shinned down a lampost. This might not seem much but the lampost was about 30 feet off tall and about 8 foot away from the wall.

The name certainly rings a bell. There were a lot of guys who only did UK work and those on International only crossed paths a few times. There’ll be a lot of Beresford drivers who’ll know him. Most of the drivers there were in for the long haul. When it closed, most of the guys there were 20 year men.I was shocked when they lost the Johnsons contract and folded.Only a few years after I’d gone.Wonderful memories, keep em coming.
Hi all, anyone remember Berb (Bob)? He drove for a firm from Stockton area (Allinsons). We used to stop at the Algerian’s at Chalon-sur-Saone.The barmaid called him Berb and it stuck with him.Another nice memory, keep jogging my memory lads.
reluff go onto a site called eurowheels .loads of pics of 80s firms make sure you have at least 3hrs spare you will be on for ages

Couple of Germans at Rosslare harbour
The JLS Volvo was one of 2, IIRC the Reg Nos. were A922/A923. Keith drove 922, Johnny drove 923, 923 was written off on the A5 at Sheep lane between Milton Keynes and Hockliffe getting blown over in the winds of October 87, it got re-cabbed with the later cab, with the raised roof and was put back on the road…

Hiya Mark.I remember Morgan Freight, used to see them regularly, good old days.
Hi Dreva and all,I’ve just spent 4 hours on Eurowheels.Absolute memoryfest. So many bigs firms running out of Dover.Mondial (Nicosia)they took so many ferries the drivers couldn’t walk on dry land. Sopa Speedy (Novara)a lot of Brit drivers on there,Travaca, one theirs went off the Blanc at the first R/H bend after Courmayeur,it was there for about a year. They used to charge past and an hour down the road they were crawling from the wreckage.Marmeth Transport from Nantua,Frederici out of Swiss with Kenworths with the 600■■■■■■■■■■■ some photos of them in Aosta.Heebinks from Holland had a lot of Brit drivers, they had a Yard right behind old Trafford before Man Utd bought all the land.RH had one there as well.Fairweather (Gt.Yarmouth)Brinor (Felixstowe)Murfitts,Ken Taylor (Huddersfield)JCW (Bermondsey)Bellgate (Rotherham??),Allinsons (Darlington) Europa (South London)There was a lad on there did Lyon every week,He used to do 10-12 Full English brekkies in his wagon of a Sunday morning at the Algerians.I’m sure his name was Andy, had a Daf 95, a real star. All the Irish boys,Kelly Freight,Birds,Carna,Noel Zwecker,East West,Seaforde,Stateline,Maguire,Polar Freight,McBurney Bros,Murphy Int Transpot, Millar Bros. There was a girl drove for Millars,I think she was the boss’ wife. She was a stunner.Where did they all disappear to?All the pre 80s drivers will remember Aldgate East Underground station, the ground used to shudder with the freight going by.I remember the old bill set up a safe driving film on Toddington Services and it showed a Swiss reg Saurer teara**ing down the outside lane. They didn’t do the driver cos he pretended he couldn’t speak English. He came from Manchester,I think his brother worked on the same firm.Remember the Barreiros Dodges running out of Spain, went like stink.Panalpina out of Stratford LIFT.The forward clearance from hell.I spent days in there.Whatever happened to all these firms and their drivers. Any input gratefully accepted. The smell of deisel’s overpowering me,so I’ll sign off for now.Keep the thread alive lads.

Hi relluf, you have got me thinking now what was the name of the old guy who worked in Heebinks warehouse in Trafford Park, grey haired fellow who would sometimes give you a couple of packets of biscuits if you jumped into the back and gave him a lift to tip you. Heebinks brought Dutch Shortbread in from Holland and if a couple of cartons were damaged it was cheaper to eat them than to return them to sender, the manager was a big Dutchman, smashing bloke.
I think that Terry Smith might of done a bit of work for them, he might let me know when he reads this.
Terry drove this for a couple of years, you might of seen it.
The Swiss/Mancs, sounds like The Dempsey Brothers, JayDee and EmmDee, John and Mick.
Regards Steve.

If it was a unit belonging to Europas main subby,RFS, then it could have been Andy Hynes, AKA “No Neck”. Biggish lad, used to do a bit of Greece as well for DAP out of Erith, RFS red DAF 95 unit pulling a black DAP removal trailer.
He is related to Newmercman I believe , who is currently on an extended touring holiday of Canadia and the USA!!
If it was No Neck then you would have been regaled with some of the most unbelievable stories and tales imaginable about where he had been and what he had done!! Strange thing was that he actually had done quite abit for real!!
The Lyon run used to be an add on from tipping in Paris, cant remember anyone being weekended down that way if tipping or loading in / out of Lyon though. Could well be wrong of course.

Hi Steve, thanks for info, our yard was on the corner next to Heebinks,we were never short of biccies either.I remember that Globey from the late 80s early 90s,I never knew the driver though. One of the brothers was telling me about the Saurer,it was an F12 with a different cab.Something to do with the Swiss width regulations. We were all making money in those days. What happened■■? Keep the thread going we’ll make 200 pages.

hiya,
Never did International work but have worked for companies that did namely Bowkers, just wondering did any of you guys ever come across a great pal of mine from my days at Bowkers about 40 years ago, his name Jack Leach, i believe he went on to work for Woodside Bros but i know he did Continental work for a lot of years certainly from the 60s should imagine he’ll be retired now will be in his early 70s just a bit younger than me, thanks in advance for any information.
thanks harry long retired.
hiya,
Thought i’d just bump this one forward in case someone has an answer, the guy must have been one of the longest serving over the water drivers, i can remember the lad doing Italy way back in the 60s i was happy to drag trailers to and from Dover.
thanks harry long retired.

Come on now, don’t try and palm your twin brother off on me, I know he’s your hero
Bit worried about him cooking breakfast though, never the 1st in the shower queue was he
Dave (who I will admit to being related to) used to ship Friday for a Monday Lyon, direct from Erith, when he worked for Jock Hastie, but he used to get to the Chalon/Macon area to have Sunday off, which is understandable if you knew No Neck was in the Algerrycans

Hi Marc. hows the touring holiday going??
Yes, I rememeber Uncle Dave getting a new F12 Globby from Jock Hastie, black, left ■■■■■■ I think!! anyway, it was a very nice motor and Dave was well chuffed.
Did he mention the hitch hikers he took to Paris in it■■?..student hitch hikers!!!..one of which was female!!..best leave it there I think!!!
I shipped out Friday night with Dave a few times, I was going to Italy, either double manned with “Mad cow” or on my own. I always used to try and push on through to Milan because I had a “friend” there and she had her own apartment. More comfortable than the Daf!!
Mind you, I was (zb)ed when I got there…literally!!!
