Truckers TV series mid to late 80s

I still have truckers on tape…i have owned this since 1987.
PICARD FREIGHT HAUL…

Picard the boss…in todays world,he would have been VOSA’s public enemy no 1.

Jill his office girl…she tried to keep Picard on the straight and narrow…and more often then not failed.

Debbie the fat secretary…who didnt like anybody swearing.

Stubbsie the mechanic…always covered in oil and grease…even at bedtime.

Tom O’Brady…that is the man who picard borrowed the money from to restart his business after going bang, and who keeps 'borrowing o’bradys trucks and drivers to do his own work.

And of course the drivers themselves…

Snoggo…he was an o/d and ran a Ford Trancontinental.

Cowboy…he was an o/d and ran a Mack…and thought he was an american.

Rollo…who drove a B series ERF for Picard…and thought he was gods gift to women.

Horse…who drove a B series ERF for Picard.

Fogoff…who drove a Seddon Akti 401 on continentel and boat shifting work for Picard and thought that his wife was sha**ing anything in trousers when he was away.

Ray,horses brother who was a stand in driver for Picard…even though he didn’t have a HGV license.

Then there was the O’ Brady drivers…

Bedrock…who drove a Mercedes 1628…gentle giant and built like a brick privvy.

Trevor known as “THE EGGMAN”…because that was his job…collecting eggs from Ireland and delivering them all over Wales…probably the only sane one amongs’t them…never did anything wrong and i pity anybody who made him late…shedule crazy.

I really need to get out more…

Oooh the memories…!!.

Here is some more useless ‘Truckers’ trivia.

Stubsie the mechanic was played by Kenneth Cope, better known as the ghost in the original 60’s TV series Randall & Hopkirk Deceased…

The theme tune “The longer the road” was performed by the guy that played Snoggo - Maynard Williams, son of Bill Maynard - famous for The Gaffer, and playing Greengrass in Heartbeat…

Jills character was Jill Rayner, who came from her fathers skip hire business, had some sort of relationship with Picard and always wanted to drive a truck…

The series was heralded at the time by The Sun newspaper, and had 8 million viewers in 1987. It was scheduled for a second series run, but the BBC pulled the plug due to budget cuts and the fleet of vehicles that was in storage ready for filming was auctioned off. The ERF B Series used in the series, still in the dark blue and red Picard livery was quite a common sight on the A1 around 1989ish.

How come I remember all this crap from 1987, but struggle to remember the bloody day it is at times!.

watched this when i was a kid thought it was great

why did nicky blair get run of the road tho never understood that

ERF:

Yes matey it is…he doesn’t look any older…

Maynard Williams character was Rollo NOT Snoggo…
Bill Maynard did play Selwyn Froggatt

Nicki Blair was ran off the road by Bedrock because Nicki and stubbsie got nicki’s cousin who worked at the egg factory to set up Trevor “the eggman” by making out that he had stole some eggs…so nicki could take over the egg contract…but it didn’t work out because Picard made sure he had a few problems along the way…i think the word is sabotage…
I will have to sort out some sort of way of getting it onto DVD…watch this space…

I also have Spagetti No Junction…this is from the 80’s about trucking to Italy…no longer available and On yer Bike…this is about an international owner driver who makes a trip to germany with a load of bikes…no longer available.

Your both wrong there, Cannonball was a Canadian/British enterprise started by Lew Grade of all people, he had his finger in a few pies in Canada, and if memory serves me correct Granada TV is a conglomeration of Grade and Canada, the company was called C&A Trucking with Mike Malone & Jerry Austin, they were the only American actors in the series the rest were all Canadian. and as far as I know, no episodes exist today, but if you know different let me know, it was filmed around Toronto.

Once upon a time, I drove for Hanson Transport from Huddersfield and in the fifties one of the Hanson family went out to Canada to start a trucking company.
Their trucks and yard were used in making the series Cannonball, this is what I was told many, many years ago and believed it to be true.
Looking at the Hanson Logistics web site, their history makes an interesting read, especially if you have ever walked the old Pack Horse Trails from Huddersfield to Oldham.

Quite right - 21 years since I watched it - sorry!

If you search eBay item 360023019163 you can see that the theme was released on vinyl in 1987!.

Didn’t know that - until I just Googled it!.

Truck magazine also ran an article on Truckers and the jist of the article was the RHA thought the programme gave a poor reflection of the haulage industry! You can make your own mind up on that one. I watched most episodes and it wasn’t bad, a second series would have been more popular I believe. James Hazeldine (Picard) died 2002 after heart surgery. Other trivia bits Bill Maynard (Greengrass, Selwyn, the Gaffer, Carry On’s etc) married second time to Donald (Bluebird) Cambell’s wife Tonia Bern also an actress. The tough Irish guy is Sharpes oppo Patrick Harper. Phil Davis played Cowboy he’s done a lot of Mike Leigh stuff and recently played old Steptoe in a telly drama about the real Steptoe and Son. Also on this thread the Cannonball series, I watched as a kid late Fifties, they drove a Bubble nose Kenworth I believe. Paul Birch played the part of Malone the driver with his mate Jerry played by William Cambell, he looked like a Tony Curtis type obviously in there for the females. Birch was a well known character actor and was in many films and TV series, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, big, round faced guy sometimes with a tash. About time we had another trucking prog on telly, mind it would be pretty boring and shot entirely in a motorway hold up, perhaps not. Franky.

G’day,
I found the artice that you were talking about. I like the old B series, good to see it’s still around. I think I was 11 or 12 when it came out,my old man wouldn’t let me stay up and watch it,he reckoned it was rubbish. He didn’t have anything to do with haulage,I guess he was’nt into it so I couldn’t be either,I was so gutted at the time.
I probably wasn’t missing out on much.

Cheers Jamie
