ah right, are you manually switching between other work and driving then?
I would find this a little bit of a pain doing multi-drop.

Yep, GPS does use a lot of battery.
I am able to reduce the frequency of the GPS checking, so that it only updates once every few seconds rather than once per second. Even then it still uses a heap of battery, and reduces the accuracy of the resulting logs.
In the end I made a decision that users of the GPS will mostly be plugged in anyway, so I would aggressively use the GPS for the best accuracy possible and forget about the battery usage.
If you’re on Android and want to test a version with lower resolution GPS, I’d be happy to help. It’s harder on iPhone as I can’t easily send out test copies. PM me if you’d like that.
Cheers,
Luke (TruckerTimer author).
Luke,
Interesting read about GPS. Can you just confirm something for me please? I have my phone plugged in to a charger in any case, so if I turn on GPS are you saying that I do NOT have to change from driving to other work and vice versa as it does it automatically?
Mike
It’s okay, I found the answer!
Brilliant app, did’nt realise there was an update.
Envy about android and iPhone unwillingly(as my father gifted me Nokia windows phone). Is there any equivalent app for Lumia phones?
I have an HTC windows phone and agree that the apps for these phones are not very well supported and can’t find anything like a truck timer. I emailed the creator of this app a while ago and was told there were no plans for a windows version.
I think it’ll happen in time the os is slowly gaining traction and more apps are appearing all the time
Well I downloaded the trucker timer app to use on my i pad , once I’d figured out the basics it seems very good .
Only problem is I can get the GPS function to work So at the moment I’m having to switch to other work manually when stopped .
Cheers mike

Hi Mikey,
The GPS lock on an iPad can be really slow when you don’t have a data connection. The way it works (usually) is that a rough lock will be gained from data connection then a super accurate lock from GPS. Without data this takes much longer, so that might be the issue.
The other thing to do is to download a free GPS tracking app or speedometer app and check how accurate that is. All GPS apps use the same information from the chip, so if a speedometer app isn’t reporting your movement properly then TruckerTimer wont be able to use it either.
Also, be aware there is a two minute delay before switching to “Other Work”. Tacho’s switch over immediately, but will discard any stopped period shorter than this. TruckerTimer works a little differently in that it waits two minutes before switching, and will then “backdate” the switch to make it as correct as possible. This is configurable in the settings, however.
Let me know if you have any success, here or via truckertimer@gmail.com.
Luke.
Thanks for the reply Luke ,
I have it Sussed now I think , I use my I phone for the 3G data connection on my I pad ( tethered I think it’s called ) so having turned that on it appears to be working
Anyway it seems to be working now just a bit heavy on the battery drain like others have said .
The I pad is a 3G version but have a decent data allowance on my phone so haven’t bothered with a sim for the I pad
Thanks again Mike
Hi, this is for Luke. I’ve been happily using TruckerTimer on my old Galaxy S2 on JellyBean. I’ve just changed to a Nexus 5 running stock KitKat 4.4 and the app keeps crashing
It won’t record any driving time and when I swipe to the log screen, the app force closes.
Are you planning to update for 4.4? I do hope so, as it’ such a brilliant and useful tool
Many thanks, Nez
Hi Nezza:
I just got the N5 myself (wooh!) so have been able to test this.
The problem is coming in with Android 4.4 when you don’t yet have a daily or weekly rest recorded. Once you’ve completed at least 1 daily/weekly rest the crash should stop. Let me know if it doesn’t.
I’m working hard on an update to fix this and other things. The problem is that I’ve got a whole lot of half-finished features, so just a tweak to fix this problem and then release is a little difficult I’ll try and pull back the half finished updates so I can release just a fix for 4.4. It’s a busy weekend, but hopefully I can get it done.
Cheers,
Luke.

Anyone know if there is an iPhone equivalent. Been looking but can’t find any
I just have a little basic one on my iPhone called “Drivers Hours”, basic but it works good enough for me!

Driver hours is crap I used it on my iPhone. I’ve downloaded the truck timer app now and it’s great that’s on iPhone 5s
TruckerTimer is on iPhone also.
The other two I know of are “TTGuard” and “Logbook Checker EU”. No idea how good they are though
Thanks Luke, I’ll let you know how I get on next week, Nez

I’ve fixed the problem.
The update is running out “staged”, which means 20% of users will get the app each day for 5 days (or something like that), so it might be a few more days for you yet. Email me at truckertimer@gmail.com and I can have you “skip the queue” if you want.
L.
Thanks Luke, I’ve put it on a weekly rest and it seems to be working atm. I’ll try it at work tomorrow and see how it goes.
Cheers, Nez.
