How long has he been driving? Was it just panic that made him not use the run off ramp or lack of experience?
Could of had a brain ■■■■ at a really bad time.
I guess we will never know but in the video at 1:14 the driver says there were uphill parts where the driver could have slowed but he didn’t and he also didn’t use the emergency lanes (plural), if there had only been one lane and he couldn’t get into it due to other traffic you could have excused him not using it but the fact you can see him go past the entrance to the lane then cut up the pickup on the bend is inexcusable and if he had the chance to slow on the uphill parts and chose not to then he deserves his punishment.
That is ■■■■■■■ ridiculous 2.5 years for each life he took he knew the brakes were fading he ignored the emergency lanes, i feel heartily sorry for the families of the dead.
Not sure what the speed limit is in CO (I think 70 for trucks?) but wouldn’t surprise me if he just drove the limit thinking it was fine. Plenty of videos of US truckers doing crazy speeds with loaded trucks. I don’t care if it’s legal; it’s crazy. In Texas, 85 is legal.
Put on top of that brake failure downhill, and well… you end up with that disaster.
I suspect he probably panicked and didn’t want to take the run-away lane.
He should serve some time, but not 110 years. He definitely made some bad decisions, and being new wouldn’t help, but it doesn’t entirely exonerate him from all responsibility, either.
Anyone know how long he’d actually been driving trucks?

I think exactly this. Not a single one of us can say what we would have done in that situation. When everything is going to sht you always over estimate your abilities and think you can pull it back which leads to mistakes like this.
