Hi Larry, just can’t recall the name of the ERF dealer in Blaydon, even the Cert of conformity and plating note I kept from the new 4 wheeler ERF E6 I drove dated 1987 doesn’t have the name on it as this came from Sandbach, not surprised though it was an awful bloody wagon and the 6BTA engine didn’t do ■■■■■■■ any favours, flat as a pancake, that and the also new air suspension FL7 unit at Fergusons were the worst vehicles I ever drove from being new! Franky.

Would I be right in saying it was Dutton Forshaw ■■?, Regards Larry.
That’s the one Larry, I had Northeast this and that going over in my head and it wasn’t anywhere near, thanks mate next question is what was their history! Cheers Franky.
I’m trying to remember truck dealers around Berkshire when I lived there, apart from those in Reading that I have already mentioned, and there wasn’t that many really! There would have been Hewens on the A4 at Maidenhead who were BMC dealers (I worked at their Reading branch) and Finefield Garage at Slough (still in Buckinghamshire in those days!) who were Bedford as were A.C Barnes on Oxford Road Wokingham who I briefly worked for as well… Berkshire seemed devoid of any ‘heavy comercial’ dealers it seems and those firms who used heavy vehicles such as Courages Brewery, Thermalite Ytong, Alan Hadley and Harry Coff etc tended to maintain them themselves.
Pete.

Hello All,
This all bring,s back memories, North Cheshire Motors became part of the Ryland empire and i joined the sales dept at Warrington in the mid 70.s as an immature, naive school leaver. The md was Geoff Ward, a fine and fair boss, my boss was Jack Horsford, the sales director who scared me to death !!!, the salesmen were Jack Green , Bob Day and Colin Mahon, three totally different characters who taught me so much about life, people, business and trucks. I am still in regular contact with Jack Green who emigrated to Australia in the early eighties. These were the early days of the SA 400 series and it was a very busy and successful time, but we were also Dodge dealers for a short time after my arrival, but i think Jack Horsford hated the PB vans, Walk Thru,s and Commando,s and made me park them at the back of the yard behind the 400,s !!!. Moved to Lancashire Truck [ Volvo ] at Liverpool when the early eighties recession struck, another part of the Ryland empire, and wow, i could understand how the foreign makers were selling so many. The F10/12 were fabulous things to drive. Bill Whale used to come up once a month for board meeting,s in his chaffuer driven gold Rolls, sometimes with his son who we nicknamed Baby Whale. I left the industry in the recession but still follow all things truck,s to this day, whatever became of the Ryland group ? they had dealerships all over the uk both trucks and cars.

IIRC Coalite Group were the parent of Scotts of Nottingham and Scotts also opened the Atky dealership in Penrith in 1971 and IIRC The Falkland Island Trading co. belonged to the same group and they were involved in sheep farming on the Falklands prior to the war with the Argies, not just sure what happened to Coalite Group,I think they fizzled out or were taken over perhaps.I’m not too sure but I think there was some tie up with Blackwood Hodge and Coalite as well and IIRC a bloke called Stuart Eden-Smith was “Boss Man” at Scotts of Nottingham .Cheers Bewick.PS I got our first P cab Scania 82 via Morville Trucks, which I believe became part of Keltruck eventually.

I was at school with a T.G. Bradshaw, whose family owned, among other things, the Rolls Royce dealership in Preston. Would this have been the same family? I remember Tim’s Dad used to smoke cigars some 60 years ago and I have always loved that smell ever since!
John
Maybe there`s a few of you who can remember these companies , from C.M. June 20 th., 1969 .
Cheers, cattle wagon man .
I mentioned Vincents in an earlier post, they were the ‘opposition’ as they sold Austins and we sold Morris! Of course they also did superb vehicle bodies, some of their horseboxes are still around nowadays many years after the company closed and the fantastic looking showroom opposite Reading station was demolished. Pic below.
Pete.
