It’s a ■■■■■■■ great wooden 'orse, but I can’t for the life of me see how it could damage your computer unless it fell on it.

Any insecure image on a website has the potential to do a “drive by download” (trojan delivery) to your pootah.

Once in the system, an attempt might be made by the new bit of code to do any one or more of the following:

(1) Download more dodgy code in the background without your knowledge and consent
(2) Shunt you to a webpage full of viruses and other dodgy code
(3) turn off, or alter your security and browser settings, including resetting your regular “home page” to dodgy websites.
(4) Install a “key logger” which trys to gain your passwords for everything including TNUK and Bank accounts
(5) Tell you your PC is infected, and start running what looks like a Virus scan telling you “You’re full of viruses, and need to buy this software to clear it off”.
The software “for sale” here is actually a placebo, and the “viruses” coming up on the list are any old text to try and scare users into sending money online or via western union to the guy waiting behind the bicycle sheds in places like Nigeria & Moldova. This kind of attack is known as “Scareware”, and is initiated by the trojan originally downloaded, sometimes the moment that download is complete.

To reduce risks of being infected by trojans, you need to wear the computer equivalent of one (with reference to the condom brand!)
Keep your internet settings on HIGH SECURITY, and make sure cookie handling is REJECT ALL THIRD PARTY COOKIES.
Chances are, your computer is already set this way, so nothing needs to be done, which is why you’re not infected already.
Occasionally, a bug in the browser/windows is found that allows a trojan to inject some code past your security settings. The auto-updates patch the machine to close these loopholes as they occur.

Yes, that’s happened to me! I’ve logged in here to find snotty messages from some mod telling me I’ve been a naughty boy and I haven’t a clue wot they’re on about?

What antivirus are you using? Half of the so called antiviruses that are sold with computers nowadays are malware themself.

You can’t spell Norton without a NO!

just bog standard avgfree that’s all. You don’t need to buy anything fancy, and I agree that things like panda and nortons are a complete pain in the arse.

When I bought the PC I have now, I got supplied with a hard drive with windows & nortons on it “factory”.
Since I was also supplied with the system disks, I decided to re-format the hard drive before I started, so I could get rid of the nortons, which cannot be removed otherwise.

“Attention. Someone who think’s he’s God on his own machine is attempting to delete your antivirus software! Alert Alert!”
