Triple manned long distance coach trip

Sir +:
I thought the bunks were quite cosy really.Always had a furious sleep  Some even had
a small radiator.Worst was a Neoplan Cityliner front bunk, you had to be an acrobat to get in,and only just enough room to turn over.Best was a Merc 0303,enough room to sit up for a read, and…a radio!!!

Best bunk I ever used in a coach…Jonckheere P90 semi-decker Volvo B10M. Lift up the courier seat & straight in the bunk. Lots of room - it ran front to back under the upper-saloon floor, included a shelf to put your ā€˜personal kit’ on, full-length radiator, light & intercom telephone. Brilliant bunk on a BRILLIANT vehicle!!!

Worst -Neoplan Skyliner Double-decker coach - bunk at rear of vehicle, part of luggage compartment - right next to Merc. V10 engine…NO!!! not good!!!

This is a Jonck P90 - forgive my IT skills - can anyone ā€˜paste’ it on the threadā– ā– ?

The bunk runs above the N/S/F wheel - you can just see emergency locker door/window which was also useful to gain access to bunk shelf from outside - if you wanted to stash something in there!!!

What a superb vehicle these were - god I miss 'em!!! Our’s was of 1982/1983 vintage. No wonder the British vehicles all but disappeared!!

^^ I agree the 0303 is the best bunk, low down & in the middle of the bus, there was plenty of room, warm & quiet
I also agree the cityliner was the worst, but as far as I was concerned, anywhere away from the ā€˜punters’ was fine by me

My current favourite bunk is in a Vanhool Astron. Behind the courier seat as you go in the front door. I had a look around a Ferris Berkhof decker this week with a bunk in the cab in the front. Looks bloody lovely.

So was you on nat travel east or kettlewells

Wing and a prayer- It was for Kettlewell’s during 1990’s & beyond. They’ve just finished re-furbing their P90 & she looks the dog’s. The restoration featured in 2 x editions of vintage bus & coach mag. can’t remember title but I have both editions somewhere. I went all over as co-driver & then main driver in that vehicle - superb - what memories, for a lad in his twenties (back then)!!!

She was originally a Trathens Airways motor iirc

Correct - Kettlewell’s got it when it was around 4 or 5 years old I think - they’ve owned it & run it ever since -owner loves it- he’ll never part with it!!! Great vehicle to work with - quick, comfortable for drivers & passengers, reliable, plenty of luggage space, full exec. including fridge, toilet, Webasto, TV/video, coffee machine (boiler) - maybe not all in fully working order nowadays but they were when I ran it…just great!!!

This is turning into CoachNet rather than TruckNet

Talking about Mercs, I drove this one quite a few times while working for Len Wright. No bunk but a fully fitted kitchen at the back, better than my own one at home. 32 seat exec. When this picture was taken, I was being paid £120.00 a day just to sit in this field in Gloucestershire for three days while they filmed a dog food commercial. I was the rest area for the film crew. You can see the catering wagon in the background. Middle of summer so I just sat in a deckchair topping up my tan for the whole time. Nice job that !

Drove this Neoplan Skyliner a few times. I was sweating buckets after loading luggage, what with the heat from the engine in the compartment. As for the bunk, I’ll never know how anybody got any sleep in there with the luggage right beside you. Luckily, I never had to try it out.

A coach driver sporting the very latest fashion in beachwear down in Italy :unamused:

It’s not me I hasten to add !

For the dog lovers among you, a couple of’ behind the scenes’ shots of the dog food commercial they were filming. Pedigree Chum I think it was?

I definitely remember the Assistant Director. She was top totty. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of her. Pity :frowning:

This post must surely rank as the most unusual job ever described on TruckNet!

That’s the one…impressive vehicle but the bunk was horrendous in luggage comp./next to engine and there was never enough luggage space for 70-odd passengers anyway, so the bunk was usually filled with cases if not reqd. for sleeping in!!!

I once saw a 15 metre version of this vehicle in Bolougne (mid-1990’s), it was an 8 -wheeler with twin front steer axles, upto 120 seats dependent on configuration!!! Very impressive I think it was called Neoplan Megaliner or Jumboliner. Great piece of kit but just imagine that amount of schoolkids on a Euro tour thoughā– ā– ?

Harrods of London (yes the shop) had two Skyliners on sightseeing duties for a while - 83/84 A reg’s I think

That’s it - Neoplan Jumbocruiser it’s called. I’d fancy a spin in one of those beasts!!! Without a full load of passengers and luggage though!!!
