When and how did this CRAP start. We’ve just had a MOB at our door most of them in the age range 15-19 one at least we know to be wearing a tag as he’s just been released from prison after a two year sentence for robbery. They numbered about TWO DOZEN ! SWMBO saw them heading through our gate and went out to meet them (she’s not one to be messed with!) and chased them out. LUCKILY they went 'cos there was more than enough of them to give us real trouble. As it was we felt we had to stand guard at the door waiting for them to disperse which they did after 5 minutes. Not a pleasant experience for us with three adults in the house but what about old folks living on their own. When we were kids we had to do a wee turn to get a sweety but if we got knocked back there was no threats or repercussions. This American import is unpleasant and I’d like to see it eradicated. Over to you parents…
Never Agreed with it. Was never allowed to do it when i was a kid As my mum Said it Was Like Begging.
But must admit dont mind it when its the young kids that are out with the parents and have made a real effort to get dressed up. But like you say its the older “kids?” That ruin it by Getting a 49p mask and Expecting to Get given something for that… No chance!
At the moment round our way,it’s not so bad, because all the visitors are small kids, including one of my daughters,so I don’t mind so much.
However,I just get sat down at the 'puter, and…hang on…brb…
there’s another knock at the door.
Ken.

My Old Dear wouldn’t let me do it either for the same reasons .
So far, no door knocks here but I’m not expecting any either. I didn’t get any last year and I live in a primarily Asian area. I wonder if they don’t “celebrate” it or the parents round here have the same thinking as my Old Dear.
I don’t agree with it either as parents we spend most of our time telling the kid’s not to except sweets from strangers and then they encourage their kid’s to knock on strangers doors asking for sweets…crazy
pam
Every child who knocked on my door tonight was given a small bag of sweets or a piece of fruit, i dont it when i was a kid and i dont have a problem with it, i was at work but my wife looked after them and my kids got dressed up to accept their visitors because they couldnt go out.
I always used to look forward to going to the local bobbies house Constable Murphy he didnt buy peanuts or sweets he used to give us all some money, needless to say he was one of the most respected policemen in our area,
I think halloween is more about raising a community spirit but i think people should put a welcome or not welcome sign on their door.
P.S. it is NOT an American idea it is actually a Celtic idea and is accepted very highly in Scotland(it originated in Ireland AFAIK), you know where they are all tight:):):)…

I guess it depended where you grew up then. Trick or treat only became known to me in the last few years and I assumed it was another Americanism. When I was young it was known as guising and we only went to peoples houses we knew, never to a strangers house cause that would have been rude to turn up at someone’s house and do a turn for sweets or whatever if you didn’t know them.
The wife doesn’t agree with it at all and we were going out deliberately last night but one group caught me on the hop by coming to our back door (little monkeys), we had nothing in so told them to come back. After that hid upstairs with no lights on and curtains shut on the computer until the wife came home.
I was talking about the trick or treat bit i.e. give us something or we do something ■■■■■■■ I did it as a kid we’d knock on the door and say “Any Galoshuns ?”. A lot of people would just give you a sweety and let you go.The ones who wanted their moneys worth would ask you to do a wee turn to earn your sweety ! But above all else it was for KIDS not friggin adults (nearly) turning up on your door mob handed some of them you know are nasty pieces of work. I say that bit has come from the States, they can have it back!
I’m a soft touch and dish out sweets ect, but I spent halloween with a friend who insisted on answering the door with her 6 stone dog making out that she was having trouble holding the dog back when in reality you were more likely to get licked to death. I mentioned this to another tnet member who said that he sits in the dark and pretends to be out!
taken from itn news website :
A man is critically ill after being shot by thugs in Halloween masks who shouted “trick or treat”.
At least two men wearing dark clothes and masks called at a house in Huyton, Merseyside, at 9.10pm last night.
A woman answered the door and one of the men said: “Trick or treat”.
The woman called a man from inside the house, and he was shot several times on the doorstep.
The 31-year-old was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
His condition was described today as “critical but stable”.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Scarth, of Merseyside Police, said: “We believe the address was targeted.”
Acacia Drive, where the shooting took place, was cordoned off today while officers searched for clues.
House-to-house inquiries are under way and high-visibility police patrols in the area have been increased.
