I Was on a recovery with the Diamond T on a black night on the A 5 just south of Gaily island the loaded artic in trouble was an ERF belonging to Harris rd transport?!! Or was it JeffryRainer ?!! Anyway it had a Broken 1/2 shaft . The A5 was a three lane highway in the 1960 , parking the recovery in front of the artic , Clff Smiith held the torch while I started to remove the OS shaft . We had on the flashing yellow on the recovery, and had already lite up burning diesel rope at the rear of the trailer , Then Smithy yelled look out Ron as he kicked me under the trailer , then all hell let loose , a dark shape of a truck Slammed into the trailer ripping out the side of his box body as it careered down the side of the artic with its load tumbling out on top of us Smithy jumps onto the spare wheel on the ERF ,I was nearly run over by the trailer legs as the rig moved forward , knocking the driver down who was standing in front of his unit he went under his front end ,as the whole lot hit the Diamond T smashing the ERF cab to bits , as it hit the jibb on the crane ,this blocked the A 5 until the Police came , the fist thing they did was to fill there cars up with the Bounty thankfully we all survived with cuts and bruises, how lucky where we Ron

.S Jones had a couple of Dyson tipper trailers with 4in line back axels , I remeber Terry Grithes complaining about the brakes on his loaded trailer ? Nobody hade faith in this set up , so I adjusted up all the brakes and took it on a road test with the driver going down the Becon hill ? On a wet night!!! I slammed on the foot brake , I felt the 20 Ton of scrap lhit the unit A sieres ERF tacking up the slack on the 5 th wheel and to my relief the out fit pulled up straight thank God Terry said Thanks Ron for the brake test he was a lot happier , Ron

Hi Ron,
Three Crowns Garage was on left hand side before you get to Barr Beacon? was there a haulage company there also? Pete

Pete , The Diamond T that we had , did have a roof but an open back ,you could knock it out of stick at the top of the Old Sutton rd and it sounded like thunder as it gather speed to the Chester rd reaching 50 mph it was bloody frightening ,you could hit the pad at the bottom and change the lights to Green to turn L or R , we all loved this truck taking two cans of airo start ,one on each of the 2air cleaners on a freezing night sometimes using a diesel rag , on a welding wire lite up and see the flames sucked into the inlet manifold To start this Hercules engine , Its weight was 21 ton including ballast top speed was the same as the governor 2100 rpm It was great to drive I remember Cliff Smith leaving the drive seat walking out the back and me scrambling round to take over , great days Ron

Pete there was no haulage firm it was a garage on its owns land well known , they had a contract with BRS and we did every thing there including petrol tankers resprays engine repairs BRS and all the night trunk trucks that used the chester rd , we where on call with the law , very busy on a cold wet Friday night nearly always a fatality Suttons of St Helens 8 wheelers with hydraulic brakes , and there ERF s all heavy goods on route to the Smoke The sounds that stand out was the Foden Two stroke with its rounded cab on a still frosty Night, as it roared on down the Chester rd it sounded fantastic a sort of screaming whine with power ,pulling there sheeted loads those days are gone but ENGLAND has now a chance to show the money grabbers that are shrinking back to there slimy holes , that we are still the best in the world and will do whatever it takes to make Britain Great Again Ps in 1963 the Chester rd was littered with Broken Road springs in that very cold winter Ron ,

wish my late father was around to see the diamond t he drove them through nth africa and then italy in ww2 for 4 years he was at monte casino as well, he always spoke very highly of them especially the hercules engine, its funny after the war he drove lorries but mainly smaller stuff maybe he had enough of the big stuff who knows he could have driven that one in the pic

Thanks for coming on Board. Fredm I’m sure your late father would be proud that you have named him on this thread an it my pleasure to read your comments , you mentioned Casino well I never did ?!!’ My wife’s father came from a small village near to that mountain he was in the BritishArmy WW 2 from North Africa though Italy to the freedom of Europe he died when my wife was 12 and his memory was sketchy but I took a old MG car and found that very house where he lived it was a journey of a lifetime , Thanks again Ron

Anyone remember J G Healy on chester rd my Dad always filled up there ,and we would stop at the cafe up the hill towards shire oak lights on route to the Derbyshire and yorkshire steel works with scrap from coopers smethwick .

I enjoy this thread! Quite some memories come alive and good for younger drivers
life then was without specialties…we had colleagues ready to help, good mechanics,
some of us airco and well paid jobs far from home.

I joined Ziegler in 1977 out of Belgium with about 30 trucks, mainly Mack, Autocar, ERF
and some other exotics. We were alive and active during the build of hospitals in Riyadh
and Jeddah with about 4.500 containers to Tabuk and Khamis Mushayt.

Here you are Ron …this was the dreaded Atki handbrake …thinking back I drove a Dodge (V8 Perkins) that had a similar setup on the dash ■■? anyway that was UK side long long ago … back to the Sand !!!
