Thanks Jona , for the photo of 234 & trailer 74 they could well have been on that muck spreading job , you mentioned George Carr , he was the the man i opened the safe for in Dammam , I filled it full of water , and burnt a square hole in the door ,Martin Mears took over from him , I don’t know what happened to him one minute he was there and the next he was gone , Ron
Living in KSA was an experience of a life time the work In Jeddah & Dammam was rememberable for its challenges with the breakdowns and distance away from base ,the driving was brilliant, the desert colours from pale yellow ,to brick red , the dunes that disappeared into a far distant the black mirror road cutting through soft sand with trucks on stilts just shimmering lower as they got closer , to the mountains roads that had sheer drops on one side and the Cliff face on the other ,there rise and fall steep inclines that made you sit up and pull in the rains , the remoteness of the place 100s of miles from any where the heat of this country , the over loaded trucks that smelt of that burning oil that came out of the very sand that we drove over !! , and the men who skilfully drove them , the warm drinking water that was replenishing your sweat ,that turned your leather belt grey with salt from your body , cooking basic food on a primas Fire ring ,it was altogether fantastic to have lived it , my first 2 , 1/2 years was incredible , the next 4 years where more varied but still a challenge under the hot Sun of KSA Ron ,
Living in Alkhobar was the most dangerous part of my life in KSA , not because of the work although this was hard enough ? But it was social side ,with the X pats , the roof disco parties and the beach episodes , living in a country , which was typical of there date 1400 or so ? But having my wife and two teenager kids one of which was beautiful girl was a mistake waiting to happen SALLY joined a band ?called Touch This Took her into ARAMCO playing gigs and partying she came to be notices’t to the high ranking arabs ? None other than one of the Princes ? So to impress her parents we where treated lavishly ? Christmas presents filled the table Driving round in a white Corvette Stingray, having the flat where we lived fitted out with plush furniture with embossed peacocks etc And a phone installed was absolutely Incredible and unbelievable , what was happening ? Then having been promised a bonus, at work and not getting it ■■ I Went to the Saudi Labour court in Dammam and complained at my treatment to no avail . This upset the firm that I worked for and it was time to leave ? (Thank god ) ,this was the way out ? I had another job lined up ,this was the time to get back to Trucking my wife and kids came home in-tacked ,to pick up a normal life in England Ron
Interesting post on the photos forum about an old S Jones trailer in Cyprus. It looks like the sort of period piece that might look good behind Jerry Cooke’s preserved ERF.
Here’s the link:
Oh, and here’s a pic I took of Jerry’s unit at Kelsall last year:

Hi Robert
Are you going to Kelsall nxt weekend??
ERFunit looks good
Must admit that trailer does not look like an Aldridge trailer - sign writing diff
Thought the trailer might have been one of those York trailers off the Speed Dora that turned turtle in Jeddah Port - the vast magor it’s of equipment went with the ship to Peraus Greece

Hello Ron; I wondered if it might have been photographed on the Greek side of the island. Either way it was probably an 2nd-hand export that the owner didn’t repaint. I suppose it’s remotely possible that S Jones send a load out there that went wrong - who knows! Robert

As you are probably aware the Greek side of Cyprus used to import a lot of second hand trucks and trailers - the place used to be brimming in old British trucks and cars similar to Malta where I visited dome months ago to see loads of old ERF, Foden and Scammel but the newer trucks were Daf.
Interesting when in Grenada last year I came across some Trailers inc container tipping trailers from a company in Trafford Park Manchester (Bergen Trasport I think!!)
All our old stuff spread arround the world like butter!!
I have looked at equipment in Sudan who have taken the road train system to heart and I am sure the old TA dollies are there!! Certainly looked liked them - we only had 4 dollies. 2 double ache C/F that were v good and 2 York single axle dollies which were difficult to use - only used them for shuttleing th empty containers into Jeddah Port from our yard
Cheers

Hi
Nothing received
Ken b
That was an ex S Jones trailer the fleet number would have been something around 160 to 175 it would have started life as a tandem on twin wheels and would have been a flat with twist locks every 10 foot so it could carry 20 30 or 40 ft boxes it would also have had a coil well fitted where the sheets ropes chains and dwangs were hidden because you could go out with a container and come home with a general load .It would have been converted to a tri axle on super singles in the early 80s when the weights went that’s when the side guards would have been fitted this was all done in house

Brilliant! Classic Cookie research. Love the detail! It was a proper PSK then (platform-skelly: I pulled plenty of those). Look forward to seeing you at Kelsall. Robert

These were the last of the trailers David Hughes sold to Neil Thomas prior to all the new sliders they ordered. They were sold on the understanding they went overseas.

A nice detail. I would remind enjoyers of this thread that Jona contributed dozens of photos which I, amongst others, posted (with his permission) on this thread. Robert
