You have done 8.5 hours today and are so pleased about it you have had to post about it, so how many hours have you worked this week and last week
God this site is full of cynics!
The longest stretch over the last month has been 13.5 hours! I don’t work mega hours and I’m not overly pleased by having an easy day, it’s rare I have a hard day.
This post, as I have previously stated, wasn’t to brag, but to show that life on the road doesn’t have to be drudgery ffs.
Full of sad old clowns who do day shift on the agency and like to attempt to mock real drivers.
Don’t let these twisted old wannabes get you down, it’s always good to hear of someone else enjoying job and doing it the proper way.
I’m parked up in a nice quiet corner having a pint. Of milk, since I forgot tea bags
A.
Don’t worry mate, those who are too stupid to realise that the job isn’t a disease aren’t exactly going to affect me
Nothing wrong with a pint of milk. Mmmm. Calcium!

It’s nice as someone getting into this industry to read positive posts. So thanks.

No worries.
I’m well aware that the job isn’t perfect. And I’m not going to pretend it is. But many would rather ■■■■■ and moan than do something about it.
Good luck coming into the industry. Feel free to send me a pm if you have any questions that you don’t feel comfortable asking publicly as I’m glad to lend a hand to newbies, it wasn’t so long ago I didn’t have a clue myself!

But typical lorry driver’s mindset that thinks he’s on a cushy day worthy of mention despite the fact that he’s been “at work” for over eight hours …
done plenty of non-driving jobs where an 8 hour day was more tiring and dragged more than a normal shift as a truck driver. And if Chunkzilla had been doing a normal job with normal hours, he’d still have to spend time getting to and from work to add on top of the 8.5 hour day.
Great point Muckles!
Say I commuted 30 minutes each way, that makes the aforementioned 8 hour shift a 9 hour shift in reality. Thus my day was 30 minutes shorter
Don’t forget that most 8hr shifts are actually 9, as dinner times aren’t paid. Used live with a girl who worked in a Bank, she had a salaried 37 and a half hour week, but it was 9-5 each day which is 40, but they supposedly had a half hour lunch break, but unless they left the building that break would be interrupted if the bank got busy, and strangely enough, banks et busy at dinner time.

You seem to be missing the point, today the guy is sat down after a rare easy day, enjoying good grub and a pint, its a small compensation for those 15 hour days, but compensation none the less.
Thanks for posting about it Chunkzilla, it might make some of the newbies trampers think there is another way, you don’t have to make tramping an ordeal.
The lifestyle is hard enough, do what you can to make it better for yourself, that’s how I roll, and I’ve 30 years of tramping under me belt, and more to come, as I aint stopping anytime soon
Working 8 hours and having to endure a Toby Carvery meal without my nearest & dearest to share the “experience” (and kipping alone in a lorry afterwards) still sounds like drudgery to me TBH.
I only do the odd night out but the last one I had consisted of Fish, Chips and mushy peas. Bottle of ale from the tesco next door to the chippy.
Oh, and a bit television.

Forgetting tea bags would a disaster in my book.

What job is perfect? If anyone knows I wish they’d tell me.
Thanks for your offer, I’m bound to have some daft question at some point. Will definitely bare you in mind.

That word endure comes up time and again on this site. It was an enjoyable meal, in peace. And as a single guy, I’d be kipping alone at home. So where’s the difference?
I assume that you’re a day driver, great, good for you, so why do you feel the need to comment on a post about tramping?!

different jobs suit different people, tried tramping, day work and agency mixed bag over the years, but if I had to do General Haulage again I’d much prefer tramping to day work.

Muckles, you just used an important word, ‘prefer’, the sector in which one works is a choice, I choose to tramp because it suits me. Some people don’t seem to grasp that.
Chunkzilla:
0830 start - 1700 finish and Toby carvery and a pint of doom bar to wash it down.
It’s not all doom and gloom y’know!
I’ve never posted on this part of the site before,i left the UK 25 yrs ago and went OD in Norway,so i dont really have anything to contribute,
Just want to say good on ya Chunkzilla, looks like you’ve got it sussed, cheers,

Sounds like you’ve got it sussed yourself, never been to Norway but I’ve heard it’s a beautiful place.
Been tramping most all of my working life, cant say I get excited over it much. However I never complain as in some respects its a great way of life if you have the right attitude. Secret to my longevity at the job is my wife, I have her to thank as I can’t stand her around me for long so the been away all week is better than been around her for too long. a week at home and I am leaping into my cab. Glad some one else thinks its a good life too. I do the lottery each week just so that if I win I can give the money to her to ■■■■ off.
As Chunkzilla has mentioned different jobs suit different people. Im about to leave my current job on Tuesday which as nice and easy but it’s been getting a little dull. A few nights out when needed and other days it’s 6am till 5pm.
On Wednesday I start at my new job and the plan is for me to follow a couple of other guys to the Grand Prix in Hungary, stay there for the weekend and then drive back to the UK. Sound’s like hell to some people, sound’s like a great adventure to me.

Sounds like youve got yourself a good woman…
But as you say it’s nothing to get excited about, it’s a job and as good or bad as you allow it to be.

No job is perfect, but if you can get a job that you don’t hate with a passion most of the time and sometimes you actually enjoy it, then you haven’t done too bad. As for truck driving it doesn’t matter to me if that is day work, night trunking a few nights out or away all week or even longer, I’m not going to say somebody is wrong in their choice as I don’t walk in their shoes.

Who are you working for mrginge,
Do spend sometime in Budapest, its a great city with some great history and architecture. Oh and a reputation for a good night out, last time I went we lost 2 mechanics on a night out. 1 was bought back by the Police at 5am the other made his way back across the city in the morning after meeting a young lady and escorting her back to her place, what a gentleman.
The entertainment round the back of the circuit can be quite good as well.
