BigJon, you have a PM…
Well done!!! Don’t forget to write a jobhunting/newbie blog.
Ive had a verbal offer of a job (trying get it in writing) , Hauling Reefers from Calgary to Texas . Im off to Canada Place tommorow to get my Canadian passport sorted.
Well done mate, you need to update your signature
Oh yeah lol. thanks for pointing that out
Well done on your test Big Jon, got mine next thursday fingers crossed
Good luck, got my fingers crossed for you i assume you made it to canada ok ? where abouts did you move to ? and what do you think of the country so far ?
Well done BigJon,
How do you manage to be the proud owner of UK & Canadian licences? I had to surrender my UK licence when I got my Canadian one, surely it’s the same in Alberta?
Pedantic I know, but there’s SFA in all the other forums & I’ve replied to all the relevant ones on here
Yeah had to surrender mine aswell. that hurt as id only got it a year ago But Im still a Class 1 Driver , and able to resume as a Class 1 in the event of me returning to the UK. Obviously after 2014 I would need to do the driver CPC

Hope you dont me asking, but which firm have gone with. Most companies i have looked at recently have wanted at least 2 years experience, loved reading about the process of testing and congrats on passing, good luck on your first trip. (p.s gets some pics up when you get your truck, make us poor cab over drivers jealous)
Im working for a small Owner Operator, based in Calgary. He knows ive just passed my canadian class 1, and only have 1 years experience with class 1 in the UK. This isnt a problem for him. As for the experience required by most of the other companies. Its normally 2 years minimum, and some places are asking for 5 years. My situation is different from pretty much all the other expat drivers that have come over here to Canada. Basically I have been able to come and go in Canada since i was born, No need for Tempory Work Permits and all that malarky.
My Dad got granted Canadian citizenship when him and his family emigrated here when he was a child, and went through the immigration process, ultimately ending up as a citizen. He is currently back in England and has been for longer than ive been around (im 31 this year). Although he does have a dream of moving back here someday, but cant due to him owning his own mobile service engineer business (not really a job thats saleable).
Oh and dont worry there will be plenty of pics (will be my first ever visit to the states lol)

I’ve been living in the UK for 42 years now.
I may retire in Canada if finances permit.Good luck crossing the border…

Hi Big Jons Dad.
Just something for you to check out. The UK pensions are transferrable once you reach pension age, so you should be able to retire here with your pension intact. But if your boy can make good, he should be supporting you anyway…!
I keep telling my son that, but he doesn’t seem keen. Of course, he is only 9 and that may explain it…
And if you stay out of AB or BC, your money goes further.

Hi Bob,
Hope you are getting better and can get out on the road again before too long.
1/Yes my UK basic state pension is fully paid up as regards contributions. I can draw that in Canada when I reach 65, but it will be frozen at whatever the rate is when I first draw it. There will be no increases for inflation like there would be here. Currently the pension would be about £110.00 per week. There is an additional supplementary pension guarantee payment which would boost that to about £135.00 per week. I don’t think the extra bit would be available if I moved out of the UK. SWMBO won’t get her pension until I’m 70! (I’m 55 this year). I should be able to sell my busness for something and the house is worth a bit, so if we rented in Canada we would be able to survive. Convincing SWMBO may take some doing tho…
2/■■■■ right! Its about time some funds went the other way.
3/Mine takes no notice either. Kids eh?
4/But I love BC and my kids are in AB. What to do?

The pension thing seems complicated to me, but being a British system I suppose I shouldn’t be entirely surprised. I applied for EI this week. I did it on the computer with one of the Service Canada people helping me. It was straightforward and simple to fill out the forms. I know the ones in the UK are like War and Peace and you have to fight your way through them.
You do know that the dictionary defenition of children is “punishment for enjoying ■■■…”
And imagine how much more you would appreciate the West if you didn’t live there all the time. After all, the kids should travel to see you… SK is cheap living, and you could buy instead of rent. MB is cheap, too. I don’t know how it could be…
