Hi I’ve got a drawbar trailer that I’m going to sell but I don’t have any proof of being the registered owner, will I be able to sell at an auction without such document?
Thanks in advance.

Didn’t realise trailers had registered owners !
Can’t you do same as cars etc and apply for a new registration document using equivalent of the VIN number?

That’s the issue I’m not sure if they have to be registered for proof of ownership.
I obviously don’t know the answer but a trailer is not a vehicle in its ow right over here so I would assume there is no registered owner documents for even commercial trailers.
All I can think you would have is compliance and manufacturer and mot documents.
Judging by the way old trailers often get dumped in laybys I doubt there is any proof of ownership documentation.
Apparently a V5 is not proof of ownership for anything it’s only the reg keeper I suppose it’s like you have the car on HP the true owner is the HP company until final payment is made then it becomes your property.
Ask…
The auctioneer?
Just had quick look at DVLA
My understanding is that Trailers must have for road use :
certificate of keeper
Mot
Trailer entry into service docs - I think this has to have been done at some point to get a VIN number?
Wouldn’t all this or most of it be on any MOT?
Who’d thought a trailer was as much trouble as a full vehicle!
Shame at auction you can’t just sell sold as seen then it’s upto buyer to sort but can see some legal comeback [emoji45]
Ask DVLA tomorrow and see what they say

As we do not register trailers in the UK there is no document indicating either the keeper or owner, your only proof of ownership is the invoice/receipt which you received when you bought it. As has already been pointed out the V5 for a vehicle does not prove ownership only who the keeper is, these are not necessarily the same.
All that the auction will require is your name, address and signature on their entry form, some but not all will require a bank account number to pay the proceeds to, others will send you a cheque (remember those). They will usually include the chassis number in the item description which you will sign as part of the entry form.
The permission to enter service is a completely different thing and relates to type approval compliance where applicable.

Thank you very much this is very helpful.
Strange no one has mentioned the office copy of the plating cert ,that’s what I’d be asking for as a perspective buyer if I had any doubts on the trailers seller .

Confuddled now , if there’s no registry for trailers how do they know what’s mot and what not?
Also DVLA site has form for registration of trailers etc that mentions ownership so must be some form of ownership database ?
gov.uk/government/publicati … -a-trailer

Trailers have a number beginning with A ,b or c mine for example is c125274 ,no number in the case of special types such as a 9 ft wide semi low would be mot exempt .

Never seen that before !
Have bought several secondhand trailers over the years. Just came with the plate in a holder on the chassis, sometimes a plating certificate, and usually a nearly run out MOT
To sell it, you would get a better price if it had the plate as it saves the new owner having to buy / wait for a replacement.
The trailer number that Dan refers to is normally “written” in weld on the chassis. That let’s DVLA identify it’s specification and you should be able to order a plate / plating certificate from them based on that number. MOT is tied to that number too.
Just about all hgv trailers in the UK are just that trailers.
Apart from the mot they are really no different to your cars weekend tip run trailer, lights work/tyres good, sorted!
If you removed the makers plate (few rivets) and ground off the A.B.C number it would be unidentifiable, some do have a makers WIp number welded on the chassis somehwere, but not all.

Pretty certain thats just the form you have to fill in when its due its first annual test, basically its just to give it the correct DTP number for brake testing purposes.
