Traction work ??

hehehehehehe Berewic, yeah he sounds up to date, don’t he

Light Boards - not for the last 10/15 years mate - illegal since trailers required side marker lights
try pulling a trailer with one on these days - the old bill would be on you in a flash.

Overall the standard of the trailers has increased no end (i’ve been in traction 37 years) except
if you pull those red death traps for C.C.C.!!!

Still, as I said, check, check, and check again - but theres nothing like experience!

Seconded knowall. Berewic’s post sounds like he’s stuck in the 70’s.

Highly unlikely to come accross a trailer with brakes wound off.

Always working 13’ & 15’s ? Isn’t that normal for a lorry driver? … if you have any interest in seeing the co. that employs you stay in business.

Our European trailers almost all have fixed lights, whilst our UK/Irish fleet have Rubbolites.

He was talking about deiseldog you ■■■■■■■■■. And yes it is normal for truckers to work 13’s and 15’s.

Best you stick to the subjects you know about. By the look of your posts on this subject you know nothing what so ever.

Well i would have apologised for misreading, but as you choose to be insulting, (against board rules i understand) i shan’t bother.
I’ve got food poisoning or something and am struggling to concentrate. Slept from 8pm last night to 11 this morning + 4 hours yesterday afternoon.

However, i still think you paint a rather pessimistic picture. You could frighten the OP from never trying a job he might enjoy.

Like I said, stick to things you know about. Why comment on things your only qualified to guess at? The job is hard graft, long hours and it’s a push to get the job done. My last boss took on a new driver for a new traction job out of Tilbury area. In order to make it pay, the driver was expected to do two trailers a day from Tilbury area to the Northampton area. The driver walked after two days. It’s tough problematic work and the rates are poor.

What line of work are you in not to know drivers regularly work 13’s and 15’s, librarian?

traction is work. end of. most people wan to drive not to work. if you dont mind getting dirty and helping with loading/unloading its a lovly job. pick one up, check lights(need your own lenses on 99%) seal ,tyres, then go tip wherever your told, usually a few drops per trailer, some reload some dont so can be back empty todocks and swap for another. its good work and id love to do it again, just be prepared to help strip out euro trailers(its only a few boards) and possibly a tilt or two. its like a halfway house between containers and general as some tips will be open doors back on bay and be quiet, some will be big strip downs. if you need help pm me your number and i should be able to help you with the procedures of most ports and operators(havent done tilbury much though)

OK, so seeing as you’ve been doing the job 5+ years, don’t you think it’s about time you got under the trailer and found out how much slack you have on those trailer breaks. With the trailer breaks off, you should have about 1 inch of movement, tops. Without even being there or looking, I reckon there will be 4 or 5 +.
The whole idea is as far as trailer operator is concerned, they would rather you have no brakes than their brakes. Or try it another way. While you are still in the port, pull away without the yellow air line connected and get to about 10/15 mph then break hard’ish, then again with the yellow air line connected. Then decide for yourself if you are satisfied with the difference.

gorby, I’ve e-mailed a reply to this.

Jesus, Gorby1, I’m in a position to know what I’m talking about and I’ll tell you this:

If your’e Guv is getting anything like a market rate and he he grossing £2700 a week, if he
paid you £500 a week, paid your NI, and gave you £90-£100 a week tax free as n/o money,
he’s in with a good profit. unless of course he’s trying to live solely off your motor.

Even the Eastern Europeans don’t work for money like £350 a week all in.

Didnt wish to upset you, but he’s taking the michael!

I realise that mate, but with the job market as it is its difficult to walk. however i am trying hard to find other work .

fair play to you for admitting what you have, also i realise how hard it must be at the moment job hunting and your gaffer is milking this.

good for you for not being on the dole.

HOLY HELL!.. £350 a week!!!

That must be serious desperation mate, if so i feel for you.

That is a crap wage for days, let alone 5 nights out!!!

I would tell him to shove it, desperate or not!!!

Sorry Gaz but I agree with gorby1 - any jobs better than none at all, and you should always find another job before leaving the one you have.

Crap money, yes, guv taking the mick, but you have your pride and its easier to find work when you are in a job.

Well done gorby1.

Well, thanks fellas, all very interesting stuff :open_mouth: and most of it so true No bulbs, no lenses, no handles, no…anything

No, seriously, just about all the things mentioned I’ve come across this week, luckily the unit (X reg 4 x 2 scanny) came with spare bulbs, lenses, handle, etc, bossmann is experienced in traction  , have had euroliners & tautliners this week, and had to strip em down to tip, then again to reload, but overall, not a bad week, all have been 1 load out/in per day so not bad going. Did Purfleet, Tilbury and Felixstowe.

13/15 hr days don’t bother me and don’t care about a bit of work, the only bit I don’t love is sitting around wasting time, I prefer to get on with a job

Anyway all the info/advice has been taken on board and “stored” ‘cause at the mo’ things are looking, quote, “promising” for full time  keep fingers crossed for me  :sunglasses:

And Berewic, agree totally with your comments about the brakes, pulled one out of Felixstowe on Friday, refused to take it out 'cause of the brakes until they were sorted (company that owns the trailer has a service/maintenance contract with Norfolkline, we’re not expected to touch the trailers, only bulbs etc  ) they had to wind them on before I’d go anywhere :unamused: so yes it still happens, even in the docks it’s not funny trying to stop 40t with only the unit brakes :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
