Total Newbie, Some Questions

Hi, I’ve only discovered LGV driving as a fruitful career path yesterday; here are some random questions I have, I’d be grateful for your responses!

  1. Are LGV hazard perception tests & theory tests different from category B ones (car)?

  2. Is getting around in your LGV job easier now that you have a Satnav, or should you spend as much time as the pre-satnav days to plan your work trips?

  3. Are there many paid apprenticeships out there (esp. interested in Wales, where I live), or is it more probable that I’ll have to use my savings to fund my getting a license?

  4. I know it’s early days for me (I’ve not even had my medical yet!), but What kind of things do they ask at LGV job interviews?

Many thanks!!

Welcome! Not sure I’m the best person to answer as I’ve not started my HGV career either yet but I’m in the process.

  1. Yes, I’ve downloaded a HGV theory test app (£10) and many of the questions are specific to HGVs while some questions are exactly the same as the car theory test, I’ve not looked at the hazard perception test yet but I’m going to assume it’ll be mostly geared to HGVs as well.

  2. In my opinion when you have a sat nav on your mobile phone, you shouldn’t really worry yourself trying to learn a road map or road signs in detail. There are specific sat navs literally designed for truckers, there may be a few times where you do have to follow road signs down newly built areas or country roads but this shouldn’t really be an issue.

  3. I’m not sure about this one, best to have a look on the official .gov apprenticeship website gov.uk/topic/further-educat … nticeships

  4. I’d love to know the answer to this question too!

Best of luck on your journey.

Thank you Truckerwannabe123

ROG, thanks, I’ve been slowly reading through, lots of good material, with emphasis both on ‘good’ and ‘LOTS’! It can be a bit overwhelming, but thanks for the wonderfully helpful information

Getting answers to things I’ve not even thought of reading through the material there
