I did my first full year in Canada in 2009, my job is different to most of the other lads out here, i don’t tramp around from one load to the next, my work is usually from my yard in Morris MB (50kms from the US border) down to the East Coast of the USA anywhere from Boston to Miami, throw in the odd Mississippi & Texas & the occaisional run to Alberta & that’s it. Most of the time I do a 5/6 day trip & then have 1/2 days off & start again. as you know we get paid by the mile over here so the more miles the better the wages.
Last year I had a pretty average year, apart from the time off between trips I had 4 weeks holiday (paid) which meant i was at home more than I used to be when I was in the UK & yet I still knocked out over 165000 miles, now that’s pretty good going & sounds quite a lot, but apart from the times when I have a delivery at 3am I never set an alarm clock, I go to bed for at least 8hrs every night, I have on occaision cut that down a bit, but that has been few & far between, normally I’ve done it to benefit me, not so that I can get the job done.
Now I know it’s early days, but i’m still enjoying it as much as I did when I first arrived & I can’t see that changing, it’s a different world to the one I came from, really glad I made the move.
