Anyone know why there is a question mark against rest and the break amount doesn’t match what I took
The question mark against the rest you took is probably because you never manually booked rest, in the UK it’s nothing to worry about.
When you say the break doesn’t match what you took how did you time your break, you should be taking your break times off the tachograph display.
On a VDO tachograph.
When stationary press the down arrow to display the screen shown bellow, some of the newer VDO tachographs may have a different button setup but the principle is the same.
- The bottom right shows the duration of the current break (29 minutes).
- The top right shows the accumulated break since the last 45 minute break or since the start of the shift (51 minutes).
I took 32mins break if I add the figures up on the printout, under the rest symbol it says 07h48? It’s the question mark I’m not sure about
The ? symbol indicates time that’s not accounted for (unknown activity).
If you could post a picture of the printout (after removing personal details) it would help.
The ? symbol isn’t with the 07h48 it’s with the 00h00 unaccounted time.
It reads break/rest = 07h48.
Unaccounted for time (unknown activities) = 00h00.
It’s 2 columns of data with the activity symbol before the time duration.
In the left column you’ve got:
Driving time (03h41)
Other work (03h20)
rest/break (07h48)
Multi-manning (00h00)
In the right column you’ve got:
Km (137) (distance travelled in this vehicle in the shift)
POA (00h00)
Unknown activities (00h00)
Hope that makes sense
I don’t know why it shows 7 hours 48 minutes break/rest, maybe you did a manual entry with a lot of break or maybe you never had the correct daily rest period, without seeing the top of the printout or knowing what you did before inserting the card in this vehicle it’s not possible to say, but I can tell you that the ? symbol is for unknown time not the break/rest.
The last time I drove was just for a day last week on an older wagon, I haven’t done any manual entry’s, if I got pulled by vosa would I get in trouble?

You can see the top of the time column. Card in at 0714 with 7h14m of Rest shown since midnight, two subsequent Breaks of 16m and 18m for a total of 7h48m.

Yep spot on, it’s a 24 hour printout so starts from midnight.
Does that mean it would be okay? Or should I have done a manual entry at some point, sorry about all the questions, I’m new to all this

It’s fine
Don’t worry about the questions, it’s part of what the forum is for

First off - what you have recorded on your card (and is shown on that printout) is fine and won’t get you into any trouble.
As it appears you are not working as a driver full-time, DVSA would expect you to be doing the following:
On any day that you drive a lorry, you should be fully accounting for all your time (work, driving, POA, Breaks and Daily Rest) - preferably by using the “manual input” facility when you insert your card at the start of the shift.
For any other day(s) in any week that you do any lorry driving, you should keep records showing your shift start & finish times, in order to show that you are complying with daily/weekly Rest requirements. These records should strictly be made as handwritten entries on the back of a chart or tacho roll, but DVSA will normally accept diary or notebook entries. However they are kept, you need to carry them with you whenever you are driving a lorry.
