Top Gear 2 Feb 2014

I used to work for a large contractor in the Birmingham area in the 1970 , and 80,s and they had lots of JCB,s , i used to love driving them around the yard with 4 in 1 bucket open clearing the snow. They had a rep called Terry McSweeny , a larger than life Irishman but great fun.

Its nice to see that via this forum a major British success story is staying in touch with us common people , when was Mr Komatsu last on here ■■

I understand people being disappointed with the most recent episode, but I don’t treat it as a motoring show per say anymore - I like easy viewing that’s fun and interesting to watch and gets a few laughs along the way, and Top Gear delivers that in one way or another everytime, so I’m happy

Matbro took over Bray (anyone remember the Bray works at Tetbury?). Bray loaders lost out to Volvo BM machines around here, the L120 was far superior.

mr b, what’s the deal with the heater fan on a 531-70? on number 1 it sounds like hurricane!! and any chance of intermittent wipers? good bus otherwise

I am not sure Stevieboy, I know that we’ve had to turn the mid fan speed down on our latest Excavators to get the internal noise down - the test criteria are that you must be on mid speed for the test but seems odd if it’s so high on low so to speak. It’s possible it’s a wiring problem but unlikely.
We have intermittent wipers on Excavators, Backhoe and Fastrac for definite, it’s the same Motor on a Backhoe as a Loadall as far as I understand.

Also, while you’re at it I bought one of your electric drills and it caught fire. The JCB socks I got for Christmas weren’t up to much either.

…Their toys aren’t as good as Cat ones either; Mini Muckaway shows no interest in them in toy shops.
I looked at their mobile phoneas it was designed for being treated rough etc and thought it was a bit on the crap side too.

Matbro copied our Telescopic Handlers down to the key! They then were sold to John Deere I believe.

Socks, my JCB socks are as good as my CAT ones lol. As for drills and lawn mowers, well I wouldn’t touch them, just branded Chinese products.

Got a set of JCB screwdrivers in a nice plastic case they’re OK,fit behind the passenger seat along with a socket set and a few spanners, jobs a good 'un :exclamation:

Only those who have worked in the heavy industry will realise your user name…
Nice one!
Paul

Not necessarily.

I am also a Derby County fan and our current fave is Patrick Bamford, on loan from Chelski but banging them in for The Super Rams.

Bamford was a RED

I love twin topic threads. Top gear is recorded so I can’t pass judgment yet & you can’t get any more Best of British than JCB, we still own it right?

Derf:
I used to tip JCB 3 times a week. Nice bunch of lads on the various goods in departments (mainly because they used to let me tip at night, allowing me a lie in in the morning)

What impressed me about the Bamford operation is that virtually everything is manufactured onsite rather than just assembled there. Even the parts that were delivered generally came from suppliers owned by JCB. I used to deliver the metal hydraulic pipes, cross-overs, mirror arms, exhaust pipes and other tubular type bits. All made by a Bamford owned company in Dorset (which funnily enough also made parts for CAT, Fermec, Belle and several other JCB rivals)

Is that Sterling Hydraulics?

Iracroft, Blandford Forum? They used to get a Company called Black Lion Transport running for them. Had Renault Magnums if I recall correctly.

I worked for Black Lion for 8 years. Nice bunch. Had a 1844 Eurocab Merc when I first started doing Iracroft, then the boss bought me an XF because he knew I liked DAF’s.

Dave, the old boy owner driver who used to bring in the stuff from Gates rubber used to slip me a tenner to take his one pallet for Rugeley off him (I used to tip all the JCB factories except Heavy Products so it was no hardship for me). Paid for the oatcake breakfast in the old Landpower factory in cheadle

That’s not a bad trick Derf. Win win really

Top gear… lost interest a while back. JCB good on the farm. The tm310s agri is good but get it tight against a wall have fun getting it back out. Oh while the subject is on things to fix. Better suspension and a faster box please. Maybe 80kmph??

As this is about Top Gear and JCB. It reminds me of that special the TG lads did, about all the British manufactured goods and vehicles, it was a fantastic sight to see all those British bikes, cars, tractors, excavators, lorries etc flying the Union Flag

That was good wasn’t it?

I was actually in London around that time, if I knew they were filming that, I’d have stayed down there an extra few days, it really would have been a spectacle.

Loved the F1 cars - although we know they didn’t drive from the F1 bases to London, it still looked awesome on TV and they must have done a bit of driving for the filming, so would’ve been great to be down there.

My tv guide sais 80’s hot hatches
At least two of them were on 90’s plates.

Yeah, but they were out in the 80’s so were 80’s hot hatches.

nit picking in the extreme :grimacing:

Are you sure the mk2 xr2 would have been 80’s im sure the last were on F plates 89? but the mk3 2i was early 90’s and a different shell nit picking extremely though as you say :grimacing: I would rather have seen a mk2 festa and mk1 golf though

The third generation Fiesta Mark III, codenamed BE-13 was unveiled at the end of 1988 and officially went on sale in the February of the following year

I agree, but they’re already classics and in demand, probably would have been over the price they were allowed to pay, same as the 205GTI and Renault 5 GT Turbo suggested by others.

I was never a mad fan of ‘hot hatches’ myself, at the time my mates had cars like that, I had a Renault 21 Turbo and a Cavalier LXi with an SRi 130 engine in it.

I did have a Renault 19 16v for a while though, lowered to it’s bump stops, 17" venom’s, 4" straight through stainless exhaust to an oval stainless back box, K&N induction kit and a few other mods that made it sound and feel like the fastest thing on 4 wheels. It wasn’t bad, matched a (much newer) Civic Type R from a standing start upto 130mph - then promptly and in traditional French car fashion, it broke down  - core plug went and let water straight into the spark plug holes

top gears lost it ,should be put cbbc channel for kids ,everyones talking about food banks and tellin you not to waste food ,whats funny about driving a car round a supermarket smashing into tins of food , cereals and pop :frowning: :frowning:

I agree, what’s the point of all this bloody entertainment stuff they keep throwing at us?

What we need is more informative tv with programmes with a “real” feel. Maybe more stuff about native rainforest dwellers throwing rocks at the moon and plaiting bird excrement into their hair.

That’ll boost the viewing figures no end.
