i use tomtom xxl and common sense and never had a problem, you often see garmin units on promotion or half price but never tomtom, this says a lot

I find maps and satnavs a bit too modern for me. I prefer to use a sextant and navigate by the sun moon and stars. This can have its down sides through when the sun is telling you drive through a bog.

Thatā€™s my story and Iā€™m sticking to itā€¦

This is not true at all. Got my tom tom on half price from argos.

Well when argos sells half price, it usually means that TT is discontinued or an old model

Hi All
which is best -TomTom or Garmin

None!!! Good old A-Z is the best.

AA for me

I use SatNav but ALWAYS in conjunction with a map and my eyes, if you are concentrating on your SatNav you may miss that little sign telling you about the 9 foot bridge 3 miles ahead along a single track road.

I use maps and google maps on my I phone perfect combo

Agreed Ive had some experience of satnavs and prefer to be in control. We used them when flying helicopters but its different 1500 feet up!!! Theres too much potential for errors and ambiguity on the ground and a human being planning a route with all the contingencies that go with it will as a rule be consistently better than a machine that cant make contingent decisions Each to thier own and if satnav works for you go for it I just cant leave it to a machine I would find it stressfulll wondering if It was taking me the right way!!! and what prob;lems it was getting me into!!

TOM TOM: I have 3 Garmins and 1 Tom Tom in the family, garmins are more expensive over here but Tom Tom much better, wish i had known as Tom Tom was the last one bought !

The best one I had was a Navigon. Went ALL over Eastern and Western Europe with it. It was just very fiddly. It only got confused once when in Poland, because of construction of new road. And didnā€™t know it was on the A1 in Germany for about 20k .Wish Iā€™d not sold that now. :unamused:

Garmin Dezl.
Lets you input truck weights, dimensions etc, comes with maps of europe and traffic updates. Never had a problem with it, always been spot on and really easy to use.

ā– ā– ā– ā–  Nav is the best one. Itā€™s the only GPS that seems to make drivers think they own the road

I would have to guess youā€™ve never had to use them but here are the main differences: it is unbelievably difficult to get an overview of your route on a tomtom. you need to access different menus and finally you get a map of the place you were some time ago, then you need to scroll the map for your current location. the same operation with garmin requires one touch of the screen. this is why I believe 99% of trucks stuck in town centres etc are using a tomtom. you never really know, where youā€™re going. also the graphics are loads better on a garmin and itā€™s quite faster as well.

Total tosh. All you do is tap the ā€˜zoom outā€™ icon on screen a couple of times (or on the latest models you tap the magnifying glass and then use the zoom slider that pops up) to show as much of the route as you need to see to get you out of trouble.

If you really must see a map of the whole route, simply tap the status bar at bottom right of the display and the route summary screen (with map) is displayed - then another tap on ā€˜detailsā€™ and you can see a turn-by-turn listing or browse the map.

If you really insist on getting to the Browse Map option via the complicated method you gave, whether through ignorance or bloody-mindedness, you donā€™t even need to scroll the map to find your current location - just tap the ā€˜centre map on my locationā€™ icon and it is done for you.

Must ask - have you ever actually used a TomTom?
