I bought the tomtom 5150 when it came out, but had trouble with losing gps i have now found out that was down to the processor not being up to scratch. but the new 5250 has been very good as in gps and the live traffic is brill it lets you no how far you are from traffic jams and how log you will be stuck in them, however if you put t on fastest routes it tends to take you down roads that the truck can go down but maybe not a favorite for a new driver, but will never take you down a road with a low bridge or a road a truck cannot cope with.
Anyhow i rang tom tom the only number to get correct information and help is 02088223600 trust me this correct otherwise you will be passed from pillar to post, so i rang them and they said they are aware about the truck taking people down some in there word,s unfriendly roads but assured me that there will never be a low bridge or or a road that the truck would not get stuck, and i believe them as i have been using it and are easy roads just the odd country lane when not needed really.so if you buy this system it is already up to date with the 9. something map apparently, but here is the problem if you have that map you cannot update until November as that is when the new map for the system with the patch for fastest route problem is coming out, but besides the minor fault it it s better than my snooper s8000 just because of the live traffic and ten times graphics with the ow some lane guidance i now the snooper has but nowhere near the tomtom. a must for me in november if your looking for one, just get used to it for a week or two then make your derision.
I have the snooper s8000 and the 5250 just for either or for back up the snooper gets you there but no traffic and has a tv, the tom tom i pref air because of the 3d graffics and the live traffic is a blessing and bag on its been correct every time for traffic for me
Yep, same here. I bought the 5250 in Feb when I passed class 1. It hasn’t let me down at all.
I’ve got a snooper s7000 used to be good but now it’s a load of rubbish trys to take me down 6" 6 roads, have complained to snooper but they don’t want to know.
Been using the 5150 for the last couple of years and it’s not to bad, has a few routing issues like not going the obvious way but that is easily spotted as I always check with a map mainly due to the obscure places I end up.
The tt is a lot better than my old snooper and more user friendly plus the tt traffic is miles better and my favourite feature.
Not sure if I will upgrade from the 5150 as with a but of thought it gets through the worst.
Thats said it’s not shy of 7.5t limits especially around Shrewsbury but it has been spot on with bridges.
ive got the 5250 and on a few occasions in wales and the derbyshire dales its tried to get me to do the impossible ie turn into roads that tight i wouldnt stand a chance of getting round, well the 1 in wales maybe, 1 in derbyshire no chance.
i think its based on the road dimensions but what they fail to realise is quite often there are cars parked in these streets!
The snooper s2500 I had was a bugger for slow rerouting and wanted you to turn around in impossible side roads, in fairness the tt is only marginally better, I often have to cancel the route and start the routing again or hit alternative route. Thankfully I like to have an idea via a map of busy drop locations.
It’s horses for courses, non are perfect in my reckoning but they are a very handy tool to have.

The satnav doesn’t know the widths of the roads (unless the road has a posted width restriction). It avoids unsuitable roads by sticking to Motorways and A-roads as far as possible, avoiding B-roads where practicable and only resorting to what are sometimes called C-roads and unclassified roads if there is no viable option.

I would suggest changing what you currently have input for width to a higher value, yes you may get some false alerts, or it may refuse to route you via Euro tunnel ,i have same sat nav, not had that issue yet ,but it has routed me through housing estates and other minor domestic roads, use your eyes ,or local knowledge, i doubt a perfect sat nav exists

TomTom 5250 Truck Pro - A really Poor Piece Of Kit
By Andy Swift on 6 Mar. 2015
TomTom PRO LIVE 5250 TRUCK …
To be Honest this has got to be the worst bit of Kit Tomtom have made,
I have had a Tomtom for app 10 to 15yrs now & being a loyal customer my wife bought me the TomTom PRO LIVE 5250 TRUCK Live recommended by the retailer has the most uptodate piece ok Kit!..well it would be if it worked.
to say i’m disappointed would be an understatement!
serana the computer voice goes off every time I turn it off & to get it back requires a soft reset of the tomtom
my automatic map upgrade did not work yet another phone call to Tomtom
unable to back-up or save points of Intrest or my places to hard drive due to Pro-Drive being a remote piece of computer software!..just really a disfunctional piece of Kit
No warning of Low Bridges …for a truck driving Aid it’s Frightening that the basic Functions are missing,
it would be an injustice to Rate This Piece of Kit Due to the on going Issues with it
Hopefully in time Tomtom will be able to resolve these Issues,But at the moment I Think it was brought to market too soon
Also this bit of kit could be more geared to the Business user Rather than ur average Trucker
if I had to Rate It …Sorry But -1 at best

Amazon Review Tom Tom 5250
This is a terrible device! Much of the usual functionality has been removed. You can only computer access it via Mydrive for updating which gives no direct access to the device only a sort of web based server connection so you can only do what Tom Tom allow - which is very little!!! Currently on this device there is NO support for installing your own or 3rd party POI’s, if you want to manually create your own POI you can’t even create your own groups!! they all go in the same list. You cannot upload even new voices, nothing!! You cannot even see what POI’s the device has on-board as it won’t list them or let you browse, your only allowed to word search the lot in one go - great if your sure what your looking for but what if you just want to look through and pick say a car park that suits you? if you don’t already know its name forget it! Its seems to think its Google not a Sat Nav. The device takes a good minute to boot up. You cannot get a written summary of the calculated route only a preview map. The 3D mapping looks like a prototype, not a patch on traditional Tom Tom graphics. The option to avoid an impending roadblock is greyed out which is a disaster, the English computer voices are 1985 not 2015 standard, No Bluetooth so can’t use as a backup handsfree in a courtesy car, no GPS speed display. Whilst the hardware seems good quality the software reeks of prototype experiment. Maybe after a few radical rewrites (perhaps Tom Tom should speak to real users not graphics artists) it will be a good device. Currently its hateful!
Yes but look at the date of the above reviews.
One would like to think things have been addressed since then.
Ken.
On my ordinary Tom Tom I just go into map corrections and block road or put in no left or right turns change speed limits etc
