tobacco prices

hi, going through lux to italy next week for the first time in a couple of years. can anybody tell me how much tobacco is there and is it better to pay in euros or sterling■■?

Well, superkings are 4.40e and B&H are 4.20 in Belgium, similar in Holland, so they should be a little cheaper in Lux. As with all places inside the euro zone, take euros. You’ll want them for the rest of the trip anyway. Or pay on your card. With my bank it’s cheaper to buy on the card than take cash out. (2% commission on purchases vs 4% on cash - Barclays visa debit card)

Try Route 66’s web site for up to date prices. £ or € are equally acceptable.

Bear in mind though, that if you go to Route 66 you run the slight risk of being pulled by the Lux Police and fined for being off the LGV Transit route.
You could miss that one out and go to Smokies instead. There is no difference in price but even less chance of getting a pull and fine.

You can get your fine refunded to you from Route 66 at a later date, if you were pulled on the way there.
The way this works is
You pay a fine to the Police, (roughly €320 if I remember correctly  ).
Police fines go to the Chambre of Commerce.
The premises you were going to refund your fine when you eventually get there.
They then complain to the Chambre of Commerce because customers are being driven away.
The Chambre of Commerce refund the shop.
You need to keep the fine receipt, to give to the shop, who need it to get their refund.

Got a pack of Luxembourg Superkings here at the mo, tax stamp confirms the price at 3.80 euro.

If you are doing continental work, get an account with the Nationwide, they don’t charge anything for overseas card transactions.

Wonder how many ■■■■ I’d have to buy to cover the cost of taking my mondeo from eastern Belgium to Lux just to buy ■■■■ and save the massive sum of 60c per pack…Probably more than is sensible to buy in one shot… These days I smoke pall mall menthols in the main (3.40 for 19 in Belgium/Holland, 3.60 for 17 in Germany)

fuel was €1.30 aliter last week (€1:10 with vat off roughly)
and ciggies €3.50 for a packet of 25

thanks for advice all

You can only import duty free goods for your own personal use, or as a gift.

If you import goods for any other reason you have to pay any difference in taxes.
If you fail to declare these goods, you can be fined, they can confiscate stuff. You can even go to jail, I think.

Just a reminder people, be careful what you put in writing.

£3.83 for 50g pack of Golden Virginia last week at Smokies. Cheaper to pay in euros because they charged me £4.00 the week before when I paid in £’s

Course… if you go to Andorra, it was 12.50 euro for 5 packs of drum light 50g in feb. But since Andorra isn’t strictly in the EU, you have a tight limit on imports…

Kosovo at easter 12.50 euros for 200, with a rate at the time of 1.26 to the £ it worksed out at about £1 a pack, only problem was that you couldnt get ■■■■ like B&H Lambert otr the usuall british brands, but at them prices I soon got used to Marlboro. Hope they havent gone up when I go back in October.

Very good advice, I think one or two people have said a little more than they should have done and perhaps it might be a good idea if the Moderator deleted their posts in case they are too busy trucking this week to do so themselves.
