To pedal or.....not

Thinking of taking up cycling to get rid of my gut…

Is this wise being a trucker or do I risk being a cast away?

I won’t be going anywhere near roads whether A or B…strictly fields and mud tracks…

If it’s that big just get on and do it don’t bother what anyone thinks,it’s your health that matters.

Cycling on it’s own won’t get rid of your gut. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a step in the right direction, but you’re going to have to cut down on the pork pies too.

Good idea, and also consider getting a home multi gym if you have a bit of space at home, works wonders for me…pick 'em up quite cheap on ebay, joining a gym is ok but expensive and a bind to have to travel, if its in your spare room you’ll be more inclined to use it.

As you know yourself the biggest problem is the difference in diameters of the inlet and outlet… :smiling_imp: …i too have that problem and SWMBO’s wonderful kitchen skills don’t help.

Why not use the roads it’s got to be easier than riding in fields and more enjoyable.

Just because a few lorry drivers are so incompetent that they feel the need to have the roads to themselves should not stop you doing what you want to do as long as you ride responsibly and considerately.

Good luck with the weight loss

Well I think it’s a great idea, well I would wouldn’t I. It works wonders for the waistline just take it easy to start with. Be prepared to see another side to motorists though. You only have to read the other current thread to see what fellow truckers would do to you for daring to go on their roads. However, you can look forward to saving cash and getting fitter. Enjoy.

If its worrying you, or compromising your health - it has to be a good idea. It doesnt matter what others think. All that I would add is that dont tell Jim or Ed, as they would prob ask you to couple up to a trailer on your way round!

HAA sounds interesting

Do not buy a bike, it will cost you a fortune in smaller waist size jeans and t-shirts

Cut out all booze for 3 months & see the difference.

This and biking and youll have a Baywatch body.
Roads are ok, you can get miles in if your a clicker,
I prefer off road, get down and dirty in the ■■■■■■ tackle hills you struggle to walk up and can find places you never knew existed.

Deffo do it, can be done as cheap or as expensive as you want. Where and when is down to you, I find it’s the one time I’m not thinking about anything else and can just enjoy myself.

Yes do it,but please please don’t wear the multi coloured lycra outfit until you have lost a bit! :grimacing:

What about a mankini?

get off road.

for me road cycling would bore me silly, get down to a trail centre, get off road, the fitness becomes secondary

I’ve recently taken up cycling again I used to be a very keen cyclist as a teenager and it’s great. It’s surprising how quick you start to get fit.
The worse thing is it kills your arse at first I bought the cycling shorts with the padding on the arse and this does help. But I do wear normal shorts or tracksuit bottoms over them to not put anyone off there dinner.

I’m pleased to see this thread because so many drivers I know would do well to get out on their bikes & get some exercise. Sorry if I waffle on a bit but I’ll ive you some idea of how I’ve come along in just a year of riding every dry day. I can’t encourage you enough to get on the bike & keep at it because you’ll soon see improvement & feel better for it.

I took it up just over a year ago, I need to exercise but had no reason to go out walking when I lost my dog so I decided to get the bike out of the shed. When I bought the bike new I took the advice of the chap in our local bike shop & came out with what he called a hybrid with mudguards & a handlebar bracket which allows me to sit upright on the bike. He told me it’d open my diaphram & make breathing easier. He was right there, it’s brilliant. Iike a lot of bikes, mine was bought with good intentions but had only done 2 or 3 miles before it sat in my shed for several years. I’m dissapointed with myself for ever leaving it there but so pleased I kept it.

My rides vary a lot, I take in big hills on each ride but I go clockwise & anticlockwise around my routes to vary the effort required. I was advised to do this to stop me becoming bike fit. I don’t go off tarmac but I do try to avoid the busy A roads if possible & ride through lanes around the valley in this area as much as I can. I’ve built a variety of routes with the shortest being 5 miles adding bits & pieces of countryside on to vary the distance going up to a 20 mile ride and I can do them all & only cross main roads a couple of times. I always wear a helmet & hi viz vest just to be sure. (The helmet, light kit & undersaddle bike tool kit bought in Lidls) excellent stuff and cheap too.

As someone has already suggested, a bike won’t get rid of all the gut, it hasn’t with me but it did take off the roll fat around my sides and across my back. I now have good legs & feet & it’s improved my breathing like I can’t believe. I feel so much better for taking it up with my only regret being not doing it years ago so I could keep up with the speedy chaps who fly past me. I’m getting there though, my ride today was 14.72 miles, 1hr 7mins 39sec with an average speed of 13.07mph burning 602 calories. So, I’m not as fast as them but I am a dam site faster than a year ago & I’m getting there.

I started to record my rides on an App on my iphone a few months ago, it’s called map my ride & records time, distance, speed, terrain & calories burnt. I find it’s encouraging to have a record of my rides because my next goal is to hit 2,000 miles. I’m already on 1,187 miles in 96hrs 12mins 46sec of recorded rides & considering I’m far from fit & probably look like a sack of flour on a safety pin when I’m on the bike I’m well chuffed & recommend it to anyone.

Endomondo is another good app for tracking your rides BB, I cycle regularly anything between 30 to 80 miles a week. Will be off the bike for a bit now as I came off it and bust my wrist and got to have a plate put in it this week so off work for a while too :frowning:

Thanks for the tip about Endomondo Mutley, I’ll give it a whirl if this current one lets me down. I was amazed how recording my rides got me more interested in riding the bike, these GPS apps are very clever aren’t they.

Sorry to hear about the wrist, hope you’re soon on the mend and back to the grindstone again mate

Cheers, looks like a couple of months off, suppose it could of been worse but luckily my face took most of the impact
