TM1 form

It’s just a load of nonsense really.

It’s a good idea IMO. For years there have been far too many instances of people having a TM named on their licence who they never see and who has nothing to do with the running of the haulage operation, and of freelance TMs who were in some cases theoretically in charge of literally dozens of hauliers which in reality they had no chance of doing properly even if they worked 24 hours a day. Something had to be done to stop that practice.

Paul

Completely, totally agree. I am so glad I did my CPC course, I could have hired in an outsourced TM but Traffic Commissioners have viewed this practise in a very dim light for years and it seems like it is in its death throes now.

I will have to spend between 8 and 15 hours a week on my Transport Manager duties but much of this will be reflection and consideration and I am quite capable of doing that while sitting in a Tossco waiting room.

Incidentally, if anyone wants a copy of the VOSA Goods Vehicle Operator Licence Starter Pack, complete with guidance notes, just PM me with an email address and I’ll forward it.

What’s tossco?

I’ll be doing my CPC this year with a bit of luck. Anyone know of any good courses in merseyside/Cheshire areas?

If you read the guidelines Mixer man, it does say that someone overseeing more than 30 vehicles needs additional assistance.

Seems sensible to me.

I don’t, I’m TM on a two vehicle, two depot licence (as well as my own 3 vehicle international licence) and I can (not that I do you understand :unamused: ) easilly cover everything I need to do in an afternoon & that includes driving from Manchester to Liverpool. (where the two depots are situated)

I do agree about the ‘outsourcing’ problem which has clearly got out of hand.

Ross.

I’m sure it’s fine to do your own TM duties like that, but doing somebody elses like that will be frowned upon

Because external transport managers have always largely been just “a name on a form”. VOSA know that many of them have no control over the company on which they are nominated as a transport manager.

I can imagine that does happen but still don’t understand your comments about mine doing 2.5 hours Monday, 2.5 hours Wednesday and three hours Saturday.

That all adds up to the required eight hours and that’s what he WILL be working.

So what’s the problem with my TM doing 2.5 hours Monday, 2.5 hours wednesdsy and 3 hours Saturday?

So why will that be frowned upon?

That’s the hours he’d be working, that’s 8 hours and he will be doing his job proper.

Doing those hours on someone elses licence would be fine, doing them in tescos waiting room wouldn’t, I think that is the point being made. You can do your own planning/etc pretty much anywhere cos you have most of the information you need in your head or ready to hand on your phone/laptop/diary, but you can’t have someone else sat in tescos waiting room trying to do work on your licence as they will not have the information they need to hand.

So does anyone think my TM working 2.5 hours Monday, 2.5 hours Wednesday and 3 hours Saturday morning as being a problem?

My TM might do 4 hours one day and 4 hours another day but on the tm1 form I have to state what days and hours per day.

I don’t see that being a problem. They’re not going to check (unless you give them reason to…) so in practice he can work whatever hours he likes.

I wonder what a TM is going to check for 8 hours per week, how long can you spend on 6 cards and a maintenance inspection every 6 weeks?

I agree, 8 hours is more than enought time to spend on my one truck per week.

Give them a call when your form is with them, ask if every thing is in order.
They will tell you if any thing needs sorting.
But i think the hours you have put down for your tm should be ok.

Indeed, it is hard to imagine more than an hours worth of work being needed most weeks.
