Tippers nightmare

I’ll bet that was intesting in the wet to say the least . our dump trailers were bad enough with twins on the back . Dave

I never, ever, wanted to own or drive a tipper!

Nothing on here has made me change my mind.

‘It’s haulage Jim, but not as we know it!’

Only seen a couple of this type of tipping gear, it’s a wonder the ram never pushed the body off the chassis!

O M G Pete. I,m surprised you seen any. Bet the lorry were a couple a foot longer at end of it,s life. Wonder if they tried one on a artic.
P S It were that bad I thought there was a fault on photo cos I couldn,t see ram

Can’t see a problem with that system, it worked fine on this Euclid!

Pete.

Now then Pete I can sort of see where you,re coming from, in a very vague conceptual half drunk angle. But in all truthfulness would you fancy one on your best Foden? Or for that matter on your worst Foden? Working it on the very marvellous/poxy sidewinder. N don,t lie to me I,m too old.

You never see 3 way tippers any more . When i was an apprentice at hill head most of the lorries were 3 way tippers and on of my first lorries was one . footpath jobs were a doddle , just run down the gutter and keep tipping as required . There seems to be plenty on the go on the continent though . Dave

John,

You ain’t lived til you’ve driven a tipper in anger…

Black lining eight wheelers around roundabouts fully loaded is better than rally driving hahaha…

I have no photos of the 8 wheelers I drove… but do have the attached of a beast of merc that I drove for 2 years or so when I first moved here.

We were on the new runway and then the new sea wall / port extension.

Tony, all old photos are gold, Ive not got a buga. Quality don,t matter theres not many on here who,ve suffered with that complaint. They still don,t look right to my eye, bit like Picasso paintings. Barring Rigsby,s do on the paver still no negatives. Look at Oiltreaders vid, dogs k**b maybes
Now then Windrush can you in all truthfulness fancy one on your best Foden ? or your worst Foden for that matter ? Would it be the tool for that marvellous/poxy sidewinder ? Don,t lie to me I,m too old for that lark

Most council tippers are three way still Dave. I reckon they would need strong bodies/sub frames so would eat heavily into the payload, there was an ex council four wheeler running from Tilcons Pinvin plant to the M40 when Tilcon were surfacing it and it only carried a wheelbarrow full as it was that heavy! :unamused: I also never had an issue with sidewinders, tipped plenty of stone and tarmac through them over the years and as long as you obeyed the gangers you were fine. They were handy for laying paths alongside main roads as it didn’t take long to get the stuff down compared to hand laying it so affected the traffic less. Most of the A50 Sudbury section was done with them, and the A52 near Bingham.

You may well be right John. I lived in the tipper lands, leic,s, coal, granite, clay, sand, gravel, n so then bricks pipes n concrete. General haulage in the 70s didn,t happen my way. Nowt wrong with tippers some good money n no nights out. Same s**t as all drivers have. Bit mucky sometimes,no carpets in the cab,but good craic, you can,t buy that.

Same here, I never would have entertained doing any other type of haulage as tipper work was all I knew. I was also fortunate in that I worked with a grand bunch of lads at the quarries I ran from, and most of the surfacing gangs you could get along with and have some laughs. Some blooming long hours at times on Motorway jobs etc, especially on nightwork or when the job wasn’t ready, but eventually you made it back home to sleep. Luckily we had those oversized tacho discs held in reserve…

Pete.

8 whlr tippers with granite on must have been the most stable motor put on Gods earth bar none. With load of coke on they used to crack n creek n roll for Britain,( similar to sailing a boat I suppose, what do I know I,m from the Midlands.) Steady vicar n all was well. Compared to general haulage lads with all the probs they could come across us tipper lads were surfing on the s**t.

Pete no answer from last post! don,t be shy !!■■
Both these true no bull.
Tarmac S39 30T loaded on good right hand curve Aylesbury way, nearside second steer blow out. I were doing 50ish, if it weren,t for the bang I,d have carried on.
Me n 6/7 others sat on the bench Cliffe Hill weighbridge, John (2nd name gone) come in n joined us, he had 24t Scammel, usual craic livened us up.Next fella comes in hops onto bench n says to John “why do you fancy a 7 whlr then ?” Strange looks all round. He,d lost nearside second steer wheel n hub. They sent out couple of guys in van to see if they could find out where/what became of it. After a while they found it leant up a tree in a copse near Silverstone. Why would you not want to drive a 8 whlr? Ground hugger

Not in the flesh Coomsey! You would never get one on an artic,I would imagine the body would be too long to tip using that system.

If they put one on artic bet nobody would stand near it first go. Empty. Can,t imagine why they manufactured it, no obvious weight or maintenance saving possibly the opposite. If I,d looked over designers shoulder n seen his drawing maybe said to him " for gods sake just LOOK at it". Do you get the feeling the designer, manufacturer n boss all the same man ?

Still can,t get my head round it. Just looks all wrong. No matter, have you any more info on it or where I can look for it Pete

I,m fairly sure powder tanker wagons used to have outriggers/stabilisers fitted. Not so sure but weren,t there something similar for tippers never seen one. Has anybody got knowledge of such a thing ?

trying to steer an artic tipper round a roundabout whilst tipping into a moving Barber-Greene would be a good introduction to The World of Tippers for a newbie

Not easy with an eight legger either, you tend to get shouted at if you drop some on the floor!

Wrong wrong wrong John, you,d have the best driveway in the street !

And if you ever move home you can have your house contents on your gleaming new drive in seconds ! Changing your mind yet ? Must be sounding a little bit sweeter by now.
